Before we dive into payment methods, it’s helpful to know what you’re actually paying for Richmond Gas Works is a division of the City of Richmond Department of Public Utilities (DPU). Your gas bill is included with your other utility services on a single monthly DPU bill
Your bill includes:
- A monthly service charge
- Volume charges for gas used (measured in ccf – 100 cubic feet)
- Applicable city utility tax
The account number on your Richmond Gas Works bill is the same as your Richmond DPU account number – so no need to keep track of multiple numbers!
7 Ways to Pay Your Richmond Gas Works Bill
1. MyHQ Online Portal (Newest Option)
Richmond DPU has recently introduced MyHQ, a convenient online portal for customers to receive and pay their utility bills

- View current and historical bills (up to 36 months)

- Enroll in auto pay
- Make payments up to $100,000
When you enroll in MyHQ, you’re automatically signed up for electronic bills too. This is definitely my favorite method since I can manage everything from my phone!
To access MyHQ, visit the Richmond DPU website and click on the MyHQ link. If you don’t know your account number, they even have an Account Look-up Tool to help.
2. Online Bill Pay with EZ-PAY
Good news! As of June 30, 2025, customers are no longer charged a convenience fee when paying through EZ-PAY. Plus, the payment limits have increased:
- Credit cards: up to $1,000 per transaction
- ACH payments: up to $100,000
All you need is your account number and the ZIP code of your billing address. EZ-PAY accepts:
- Debit cards
- Visa, MasterCard, and Discover credit cards
- Checking, savings, and money market accounts
To use EZ-PAY, visit the Richmond Gas Works website and click on the EZ-PAY link.
3. Automatic Payment Plan
This is a great “set it and forget it” option. With the Automatic Payment Plan, Richmond Gas Works will automatically deduct your monthly bill amount from your checking or savings account on the due date.
To enroll:
- Download the form from the website or call (804) 646-4646 to request an application
- Provide your billing account number
- Include a voided check
- Return the completed application
There is no charge for this service, which is awesome compared to some other utilities that charge for autopay!
4. Pay by Phone
You’ve got two options for paying by phone:
- Call (804) 646-4646 during business hours (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday)
- Use the self-service option at the same number, available 24/7 (Press Option 2)
I’ve used this when I completely forgot my bill was due that day, and it was super easy.
5. Pay in Person
If you prefer to pay in person, you can visit one of these locations:

7. PromisePay Payment Plans (For Past Due Balances)
If you’re struggling with past-due balances, Richmond Gas Works offers flexible payment plans through PromisePay.
Important Update: Beginning September 1, 2025, new PromisePay plans will have repayment terms of up to 12 months (reduced from the previous 36 months). If you have an existing payment plan established before September 1, 2025, you can keep your current repayment terms.
To enroll, visit Richmond.promise-pay.com. The portal lets you:
- Select from various payment plan options
- Set up automatic payments
