When I first moved to McAllen, I spent way too much time trying to figure out the payment system. McAllen Public Utilities: Who Are They?
McAllen Public Utilities (MPU) isn’t just some faceless corporation – they’re actually run by our neighbors! The utility was established back in 1945 to manage water and sewer services for our city. The Board has four members who we elect citywide, plus one person appointed by the Mayor.
Their mission? Providing “SUPERIOR WATER BY MCALLEN” – safe, potable water to everyone in the city. They’re headquartered at McAllen City Hall, 1300 Houston Avenue.
Online Bill Payment – The Easiest Way!
In my opinion, online payment is the most convenient option. I’ve been paying my water bill this way for years now, and it’s super simple:
- Visit the McAllen Public Utility website at mcallenpublicutility.com
- Look for the “PAY MY BILL” button
- Follow the prompts to enter your account information
- Complete your payment using a credit/debit card
The best part? This service is available 24/7, so you can pay at midnight in your pajamas if that’s your thing (no judgment here!)
Phone Payments – For When You’re On The Go
Sometimes I’m just too busy to sit down at my computer. When that happens, phone payment is my go-to:
- Call 956-681-1600
- Select option 1 for automated payments
- Have your account number and payment method ready
- Follow the automated instructions
Like the online option, this is available 24/7. Just remember to have your account info handy!

Water Conservation Tips to Lower Your Bill
Nobody wants to pay more than necessary! Here are some easy ways I’ve reduced my water bill:
- Fix leaky faucets (a dripping faucet can waste 20+ gallons per day!)
- Install water-efficient showerheads
- Only run full loads in dishwashers and washing machines
- Water your lawn only during your designated watering zone times
- Check toilets for silent leaks using food coloring in the tank
MPU has a whole section on Water Conservation on their website with even more tips!
Emergency Water Issues
Burst pipe at 2AM? Don’t panic! MPU has after-hours emergency contact numbers:
- Water emergencies: 956-681-1717

I had a water main issue last year in the middle of the night, and they responded quickly – such a relief!

My Personal Experience with MPU
I’ve lived in McAllen for over 5 years now, and honestly, dealing with MPU has been pretty painless compared to utilities in other cities I’ve lived in. The online payment system works well, and the few times I’ve had to call with questions, the customer service reps were helpful and friendly.
Last summer during that crazy heat wave, I noticed my bill was much higher than normal. I called MPU concerned about a possible leak, and they walked me through some simple tests to check my system. Turns out I didn’t have a leak – I was just watering my lawn way too much! They gave me some great conservation tips that helped bring my bill back down.
Final Thoughts
Paying your McAllen water bill doesn’t have to be complicated. With multiple convenient payment options available, you can choose what works best for your schedule and preferences.
Remember to keep an eye on the MPU website for any announcements about service changes, rate updates, or conservation requirements – especially during our hot South Texas summers when water usage tends to spike!
