Are you tired of rushing to pay your Starkville electric bill at the last minute? Maybe you’ve wondered if there’s an easier way to handle those monthly utility payments without the hassle Well, you’re in luck! As someone who’s lived in Starkville for years, I’ve tried pretty much every payment method available, and I’m here to share everything I know about Starkville electric department bill pay options.
Why Having Multiple Payment Options Matters
Let’s be honest – we’re all different when it comes to managing our bills. Some of us love automatic payments, while others prefer the old-school approach of paying in person. That’s why Starkville Utilities has created several convenient ways to pay your electric bill.
As they say on their website, “No two customers are the same, so why should their account options be the same?” I couldn’t agree more! The variety of billing and payment programs offered by Starkville Utilities lets you take control of how, where, and when you pay your bill.
Online Payment Options – The Digital Way to Pay
SmartHub – Your Complete Online Portal
SmartHub is honestly a game-changer for managing your Starkville electric bill, It’s not just about bill pay – it’s a complete account management system that gives you control over your utilities
With SmartHub, you can:
- View and pay bills instantly
- Track your energy usage
- Receive text and email alerts
- Check account balances
- Avoid late fees
What I love most about SmartHub is that payments post immediately to your account. This means no more worrying about whether your payment will arrive on time! You can access it from your computer or download the app for on-the-go management.
E-Checks and AutoPay – Fee-Free Options
If you’re looking to save on transaction fees, e-checks and AutoPay through SmartHub are your best bet. There are zero transaction fees when you use these methods, which is pretty awesome considering some other payment options do charge fees.
To set up AutoPay:
- Login to SmartHub
- Follow the steps to enroll
- Choose your preferred checking or savings account
- Your bill will be paid automatically on the due date
Bank Draft – For the “Set It and Forget It” Types
Bank drafts are perfect if you want your utility payments automatically debited from your bank account. Starkville Utilities accepts ACH bank drafts, and setting it up is simple – just complete their form to get started.
And don’t worry – if you ever need to cancel this service, they’ve made it easy to opt out by accessing their deletion form.
Credit or Debit Card Payments – Quick One-Time Options
Need to make a quick one-time payment? The PayNow site allows you to use credit or debit cards. Just be aware that there’s a $3 transaction fee with a maximum transaction of $500. It’s not my favorite option because of the fee, but it’s super convenient in a pinch.
Phone and In-Person Payment Options
24/7 Phone Payments
Sometimes the easiest thing is just to make a quick phone call. Starkville Utilities offers a 24/7 automated phone system at 662-323-3133 (select option 1). You can check your account status, make payments, and handle other account business anytime day or night.
Office Payments – The Traditional Approach
If you’re old-school like my dad and prefer handling payments in person, you can visit their office at 200 N. Lafayette Street. The lobby is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., while the drive-through stays open a bit later until 5 p.m.
They even have a payment kiosk in the lobby for cash, debit, and credit card payments. Just remember that card payments have that same $3 transaction fee I mentioned earlier.
After-Hours Drop Box
Running late? The drop box next to their drive-through window accepts checks and money orders after hours. Just keep in mind that payments placed in the drop box after 8 a.m. get processed the next business day, so plan accordingly!
Special Payment Programs for Better Budgeting
Budget Billing – Consistent Payments Year-Round
If you hate the seasonal spikes in your electric bill (hello, Mississippi summer air conditioning!), Budget Billing might be perfect for you. This clever program takes an average of your past 12 months of usage and lets you pay that consistent amount each month.
The amount recalculates twice yearly (January and July) based on your actual usage, and you pay the same amount for 6 months at a time. This is super helpful for budgeting, especially if you’re on a fixed income.
To qualify, you need:
- At least 12 months of prior service history
- A current account (no past due amounts)
You’ll need to contact Starkville Utilities directly or fill out their BUDGET BILLING APPLICATION to enroll.
Pick-A-Due Date – Choose When You Pay
This is one of my favorite options that not enough people know about! If you sign up for Bank Draft, you can actually choose when your bill is due. This is perfect for aligning with payday or spacing out your monthly bills.
You can select from these due dates:
- 4th of the month
- 12th of the month
- 22nd of the month
- 27th of the month
I personally changed mine to the 12th to match my paycheck schedule, and it’s made budgeting so much easier!
Extensions – When You Need Extra Time
We’ve all been there – sometimes you just need a little more time to pay. Starkville Utilities allows customers to apply for extensions that give you an extra 14 days past your due date.
The rules are simple:
- You must apply on or before your original due date
- You’re limited to four extensions per calendar year
- Applications can be made in person or online
This has been a lifesaver for me a couple times when unexpected expenses came up!
Go Paperless and Save
I switched to paperless billing last year, and I seriously don’t know why I didn’t do it sooner. Not only is it better for the environment, but Starkville Utilities will actually give you a $2 credit on your bill just for going paperless!
With paperless billing, you:
- Access your bills online anytime
- Receive notifications when your bill is ready
- Make fast online payments
- Save on postage (and trees!)
- Get that sweet $2 credit
To set this up, you’ll need to follow their “How to go paperless” instructions on the website.

After years of managing my Starkville electric bills, I’ve developed a few strategies that help ensure I never miss a payment:

My Personal Experience with Starkville Utilities
I’ve been a Starkville resident for over 8 years now, and I’ve tried pretty much every payment method they offer. Initially, I paid in person (mostly because I kept forgetting until the last minute), then I switched to phone payments, and finally settled on SmartHub with AutoPay.
The transition to SmartHub was definitely the best decision I’ve made. The ability to track my usage has actually helped me lower my bills by identifying energy-hungry appliances and changing my habits. Plus, the automatic payments mean I haven’t paid a late fee in years!
