Have you ever found yourself scrambling at the last minute to pay your Telstra bill? We’ve all been there – that moment of panic when you realize your payment is due tomorrow. But paying your Telstra bill doesn’t have to be stressful! As someone who’s managed countless telecom accounts I’m excited to share this comprehensive guide to Telstra bill payments that will save you time and hassle.
Telstra offers numerous ways to handle your bill payments, whether you’re on a monthly plan or an upfront service In this guide, I’ll walk you through all the payment options available in 2025, from digital solutions like My Telstra and AutoPay to traditional methods like BPAY and in-person payments.
Digital Payment Solutions: The Modern Way to Pay
My Telstra App: Your Payment Hub
The My Telstra app has become the go-to solution for most customers. It’s super convenient and literally puts payment power in your hand. Here’s how to use it:
- Open the My Telstra app on your device
- Navigate to the “Payments” section
- Select your service from the list
- Follow the simple steps to complete your payment
- Tap “Pay now” to finalize the transaction
The app isn’t just for payments – you can also view your services troubleshoot tech issues, and contact Telstra support through messaging. It’s basically your all-in-one Telstra management tool.
Setting Up AutoPay: Set It and Forget It
If you’re like me and tend to forget bill due dates, AutoPay is a lifesaver! This is an automatic payment system for your upfront services that uses your nominated credit card, debit card, or bank account.
What makes AutoPay great:
- You’ll receive a payment reminder 3 days before the money leaves your account
- If your payment date falls on a day that doesn’t exist in every month (like the 31st), it’ll process the next day automatically
- Service changes mid-cycle take effect immediately but aren’t charged until your next AutoPay date
- One-off charges (device payouts, installations) are invoiced ten business days before debiting your account
Getting AutoPay running:
- Sign in to My Telstra
- Go to “Payments”
- Look for “Set up AutoPay” on your service card
- Click “Continue”
- Choose your preferred payment method and follow the prompts
Direct Debit: Another Automatic Option
What’s the Difference Between Direct Debit and AutoPay?
This is a common question! Direct Debit is Telstra’s automatic payment system for traditional billed services, while AutoPay is designed specifically for upfront plans. Both accomplish the same goal – automating your payments.
With Direct Debit, you can:
- View your next payment date and amount in My Telstra
- Check your payment history any time
- Earn Telstra Plus points with each payment (if you’re a member)
You don’t need Direct Debit if:
- You make payments through Centrelink
- You’re using a Telstra Bill Assistance Certificate
- You don’t have access to a credit/debit card or bank account
Setting Up Direct Debit
- Log in to My Telstra
- Navigate to “Payments”
- Select “Set up direct debit”
- Enter your payment details
- Hit “Save”
If you ever need to cancel your direct debit, just sign in to My Telstra, go to Payments, and follow the cancellation prompts.
Traditional Payment Methods: Still Available in 2025
Not everyone prefers digital payment methods, and Telstra understands this. They continue to offer several traditional payment options for customers on Upfront plans who receive bills.
Phone Payments
Sometimes the simplest solution is to make a quick call:
- Dial 1300 369 666
- Follow the voice prompts
- Have your Telstra account number ready
- Pay using your debit or credit card
Note: Fees apply for this payment method. You can check Telstra’s website for current debit and credit card fees.
Centrepay for Centrelink Customers
If you receive Centrelink benefits, Centrepay offers an easy way to manage your Telstra payments:
- Set up regular deductions from your Centrelink payment (minimum $10 per fortnight)
- Payments go directly to your Telstra account
- You remain responsible for any outstanding amounts
Important limitations:
- Centrepay is only available for Telstra bills (not for AutoPay setup)
- Can’t be used to pay for devices and accessories
Setting up Centrepay:
- Visit a Centrelink Customer Service Centre in person
- Apply through your myGov account
- Go online to apply
- Call Centrelink on 13 2300
When starting a new Centrepay deduction, you’ll need Telstra’s Centrepay Reference Number (CRN): 555 140 429X.
In-Person Payments
Sometimes I just prefer the peace of mind of making payments in person. You can still pay your Telstra bill at any Australia Post store. Just be aware that fees apply for this service too.
BPAY Payments
BPAY remains a popular option for many Australians. If you already use BPAY, be aware that Telstra’s biller code may have changed. Here’s what to do:
- Sign in to your online banking
- Select the BPAY payment option
- Delete any saved biller code and replace with the Telstra BPAY Biller Code (found on your bill)
- Enter your BPAY Reference number (this is your account number)
- Input the payment amount
- Click “Pay”
If you’re new to BPAY:
- Log in to your bank’s website
- Search for BPAY and follow the setup prompts
- Alternatively, contact your bank directly for assistance
Pro tip: Always make sure the payment amount matches the BPAY details listed on your bill!
Handling Payment Issues
Managing Failed Payments
Sometimes things go wrong with automatic payments. Cards expire, accounts have insufficient funds, or technical glitches occur. If a payment fails:
- Check your payment method details in My Telstra
- Ensure your card hasn’t expired
- Verify you have sufficient funds
- Update your payment method if necessary
- Make a manual payment to cover the missed amount
Need More Time to Pay?
We all face financial challenges sometimes. If you need more time to pay your bill, Telstra offers flexible options depending on your situation:
- Short-term payment extensions
- Payment plans for larger amounts
- Financial hardship assistance for qualifying customers
Visit Telstra’s payment assistance page or contact their support team to discuss your options.

Making Telstra Payments Work for You
The best payment method depends entirely on your personal circumstances and preferences. Here’s my advice based on different situations:
For the forgetful folks (like me):
AutoPay or Direct Debit is your best friend. Set it up once and never worry about late fees again.
For budget-conscious customers:
Manual payments through My Telstra give you more control over exactly when money leaves your account.
For those without internet access:
Phone payments or in-person payments at Australia Post remain solid options.
For Centrelink recipients:
Centrepay offers a convenient way to manage your Telstra expenses directly from your benefits.
Conclusion: Simplify Your Telstra Experience
Managing your Telstra bill payments doesn’t have to be complicated or stressful. With so many payment options available, you can choose whatever works best for your lifestyle and financial situation.
My personal recommendation? Set up AutoPay or Direct Debit if possible – these automatic payment methods have saved me countless hours and late fees over the years. But whichever method you choose, the most important thing is finding a system that works reliably for you.
