Third-Party Billing at Mason
If your employer, military branch, or another organization is paying for your education, Mason can bill them directly. However, there are some important things to know:
- There’s a processing fee: $25 for domestic agencies and $125 for international agencies
- You must provide the third-party authorization before your due date
- Submit authorizations to the Third Party Billing Office in Student Union Building I, Suite 1600
- You can also fax authorizations to 703-993-2460
- Even with third-party billing, you’re ultimately responsible for any defaults
Staying in Financial Good Standing
To register for classes, receive your diploma, access housing and meal plans, and use other university services, you need to be in financial good standing. This means:
- No unpaid balances
- No financial holds on your account
- No outstanding obligations to Student Health, libraries, parking, etc.
If you end a semester with unpaid balances, you might need to prepay or provide a financial guarantee before registering for future semesters.
What Happens If You Don’t Pay?
I hope it never comes to this, but it’s important to understand the consequences of unpaid bills:
- Your account may be sent to collections
- Additional collection costs (30% of the past due balance)
- Attorney fees and administrative costs
- Potential garnishments, liens, and judgments
- Withholding of money from tax refunds
- Referral to credit reporting bureaus
Important note: If your account goes to collections or the Office of the Attorney General, you must pay those agencies directly. The University will no longer accept payments for these accounts.
