7 Easy Ways to Pay Your SJWC Bill
San Jose Water Company offers several convenient payment options to fit your lifestyle and preferences. Let’s explore each one:
1. Pay Online Through SJWaterHUB
The easiest and fastest way to pay your SJWC bill is through their new SJWaterHUB portal, It’s super user-friendly and gives you tons of payment options including
- Checking or savings account
- Credit card
- Venmo
- Apple Pay
- Google Pay
- PayPal
- Pay by Text
I personally love using the portal because I can see my usage trends at the same time. It helps me understand when I’m using more water than usual so I can adjust my habits!
2. Pay by Phone
If you prefer to pay over the phone, SJWC has got you covered with their 24/7 automated payment service. Just call 1(877) 401-0085 and follow the instructions.
Make sure you have these things ready before you call:
- Your San Jose Water 10-digit account number
- Your bank account routing number
- Your checking or savings account number
I used this method once when my internet was down, and it was surprisingly quick!
3. Pay by Mail
Old-school but reliable! You can mail your payment to:
San Jose WaterP.O. Box 7045Pasadena, CA 91109-7045
Some folks wonder why payments go to Pasadena when it’s San Jose Water. The company changed their remittance process about two years ago for better efficiency. Their banking partner handles all payments in Southern California.
Pro tip: If you’re mailing your payment, send it at least 5-7 days before the due date to avoid late fees!
4. Pay by Cash with CheckFreePay®
Need to pay with cash? No problem! CheckFreePay® is a convenient service that allows you to pay your water bill in person with cash. They’re the largest processor of walk-in bill payments in the U.S. with more than 20 locations in the San Jose area.
To find a location near you, visit the CheckFree page on the SJWC website. I was surprised to find there was a location just two blocks from my apartment!
5. Payment Drop Box
If you’re in the neighborhood and want to drop off a payment, SJWC has a convenient drop box outside their office at 110 W. Taylor Street in San Jose.
Important note: The drop box accepts checks only, no cash payments.
6. PromisePay Payment Plans
Struggling to pay your bill all at once? SJW has partnered with Promise, a technology company that specializes in providing affordable, flexible, and interest-free payment plans to customers with past due water bills.
All new payment plans are now with PromisePay. If you already have a payment plan with San Jose Water, don’t worry – it will be honored until it’s completed.
7. Auto-Pay
Never miss a payment again! With the new SJWaterHUB, you can easily set up and manage automatic payments. This has been a life-saver for me during busy months when I might otherwise forget.

Understanding Your SJWC Bill
Sometimes water bills can be confusing. Here are some helpful resources to better understand what you’re paying for:
How to Read Your Bill
The SJWC website offers a brief overview of the different elements of your bill. This is super helpful if you’re new to the area or just want to understand the breakdown of charges.
Service Charge Calculations
In August 2022, San Jose Water introduced a new way of calculating the service charge. You can learn more about this calculation on their website.
Water Shutoff Policy
It’s always good to know the rules. SJWC has a specific policy for water shutoffs due to non-payment. I recommend checking this out so you know your rights and responsibilities.
Third Party Notification Program
This is a great option if you’re helping an elderly parent or family member manage their bills. You can designate someone to receive a copy of any disconnection notice due to non-payment.
Smart Meters and Water Usage Tracking
One of the coolest features of the new SJWaterHUB is the ability to track your water usage once your smart meter is installed. This gives you:
- Access to your daily water data
- Ability to set alerts for unplanned water use
- Notifications indicating a possible leak
I was shocked to discover a small leak in my irrigation system thanks to these alerts – probably saved me hundreds of dollars!

My Personal Experience with SJWC Bill Pay
When I first moved to San Jose, I was honestly overwhelmed by all the new utility setups. The water bill was particularly confusing because I’d never lived in an area with tiered water rates before.
After missing a payment deadline (oops!), I decided to set up auto-pay through the SJWC portal. Game changer! Not only do I never miss a payment now, but I also get regular updates on my water usage.
Last summer, we had a heatwave and my water usage spiked dramatically. Thanks to the usage tracking, I realized my irrigation system was running too frequently. I adjusted my settings and saw my bill drop by about 30% the following month!
Final Thoughts
Paying your SJWC bill doesn’t have to be complicated or stressful. With all these convenient options, you can choose what works best for your lifestyle.
I highly recommend checking out the new SJWaterHUB if you haven’t already. The ability to track your water usage, set alerts for possible leaks, and manage your payments all in one place is truly a game-changer for San Jose Water customers.
