The Kaw Valley Electric and FreeState Connection
I remember when I first moved into the area and was confused about the Kaw Valley name still appearing on some billing documents. Here’s the deal – Kaw Valley Electric Cooperative merged with another local cooperative to form what is now called FreeState Electric Cooperative.
However many members (like me!) still search for “Kaw Valley electric bill pay” out of habit. The good news is that FreeState has maintained the SmartHub payment system that Kaw Valley members were familiar with making the transition pretty seamless for us.
Online Bill Payment Options
SmartHub: The Main Payment Portal
The primary way to pay your FreeState (formerly Kaw Valley) electric bill online is through their SmartHub platform. I’ve been using it for years and it’s super convenient.
To pay online:
- Visit kawvalleyelectric.smarthub.coop/Login.html
- Login with your account information
- If you’re a new user, you’ll need to register first
- Once logged in, select the “Pay Now” option
- Enter your payment information and submit
SmartHub isn’t just for payments though! You can also view your usage history, report outages, and communicate with customer service all in one place. I find the usage graphs particularly helpful for tracking my energy consumption patterns.
PayNow Quick Pay Option
Don’t want to login? FreeState also offers a quick pay option on their website at freestate.coop. Look for the “PayNow” button on the homepage. This is perfect when I’m in a rush and just want to make a quick payment without logging into my full account.
Mobile App Payment
I personally love using the SmartHub mobile app to pay my bill. It’s available for both iOS and Android devices, and basically gives you all the same features as the website but in a mobile-friendly format.
The app is especially useful for:
- Setting up payment reminders
- Reporting outages (super helpful during storm season!)
- Quick bill payments while on the go
Phone Payment Options
Not a fan of online stuff? No problem! You can always pay your FreeState electric bill by phone:
- Call 1-800-794-1989
- Follow the automated prompts
- Have your account number and payment method ready
If you need to talk to an actual person (which I sometimes prefer), just press zero during the prompts.
In-Person Payment Locations
Sometimes I just like going in person, especially when I have questions about my bill. FreeState makes this easy with two office locations:
McLouth Office
507 N. Union
PO Box 70
McLouth, KS 66054
Topeka Office
1100 SW Auburn Rd.
Topeka, KS 66615
Both offices accept cash, checks, and credit/debit card payments. The staff is usually really friendly and can help explain any charges you’re confused about (which was super helpful when I had questions about my winter bill last year).
Mail-In Payment Option
If you’re old-school like my dad, you can still mail in your payment:
- Make checks payable to FreeState Electric Cooperative
- Include your account number on the check
- Mail it with your bill stub to:
PO Box 70
McLouth, KS 66054
Just remember to allow enough time for mail delivery to avoid late fees!
Understanding Your Bill
Before paying your bill, it helps to understand what you’re actually paying for. Your FreeState electric bill typically includes:
- Basic service charge (this is the fixed amount regardless of usage)
- Energy usage charges (based on your kilowatt-hour consumption)
- Possible additional fees or adjustments
- Taxes
If your bill seems unusually high, FreeState has a “High Bill Concern” section on their website that can help you identify potential causes. Last winter, my bill was almost double the normal amount, and their troubleshooting guide helped me realize my heat pump wasn’t working efficiently.
Payment Assistance Programs
We all go through tough times. If you’re struggling to pay your electric bill, FreeState offers several assistance options:
- Payment arrangements (they’ve been flexible with me in the past)
- Budget billing to even out seasonal fluctuations
- Information about energy assistance programs
- Operation Round-Up program that helps community members in need
Don’t hesitate to call them at 785-478-3444 to discuss your situation. I’ve always found them willing to work with members going through financial difficulties.
Setting Up Automatic Payments
I switched to automatic payments about two years ago, and honestly, it’s been a game-changer. No more forgetting to pay the bill! Here’s how to set it up:
- Login to your SmartHub account
- Go to “Billing & Payments”
- Select “Auto Pay Program”
- Choose your preferred payment method
- Select the date you want payments processed
- Confirm your setup
You can use credit/debit cards or bank accounts for automatic payments. The system will notify you when your bill is generated and when the payment will be processed.
Additional Account Management Features
Beyond just paying your bill, FreeState offers several other helpful services through their SmartHub platform:
- Outage Reporting: Report and check status of power outages
- Usage Tracking: Monitor daily and hourly energy consumption
- Paperless Billing: Go green and receive bills electronically
- Security Options: Protect your account with additional security features
I’ve found the usage tracking particularly helpful for figuring out which appliances might be energy hogs in my home.
Avoiding Scams
Unfortunately, utility bill scams are increasingly common. FreeState has a “Ten Tips To Avoid Scams” section on their website. Remember:
- FreeState will never demand immediate payment via gift cards or cryptocurrency
- They won’t call threatening immediate disconnection without prior notices
- Official communications always include your account details
- When in doubt, hang up and call the official number: 1-800-794-1989
Last year, my neighbor almost fell for a scam call claiming to be from the electric company, so it’s definitely something to be aware of.
Other Services Offered by FreeState
While we’re focused on bill payments, it’s worth mentioning some other services FreeState provides that might be relevant:
- Start or transfer service options
- Capital credits for members
- Rebates for energy-efficient purchases
- Information about distributed generation (for solar panel owners)
- EV charging information and programs

I’ve been a member for over 10 years now, and I’ve seen their payment systems evolve and improve significantly. The SmartHub platform has made managing my account much easier, and their customer service team has always been helpful when I’ve had questions.
