Are you tired of scrambling to pay your Choptank Electric bill at the last minute? Maybe you’re looking for easier ways to manage your electric payments without the hassle of paper checks or in-person visits? Well, I’ve been there too, and I’m excited to share everything I’ve learned about the various ways to handle your Choptank Electric bill payments.
As someone who’s been a Choptank Electric Cooperative member for years, I’ve tried pretty much all their payment methods, and today I’m gonna walk you through the options so you can choose what works best for your lifestyle.
Online Payment Options: The Most Convenient Way to Pay
SmartHub: Your One-Stop Payment Solution
Without a doubt, SmartHub is the star of Choptank Electric’s payment options. This secure billing system has made my life so much easier! Here’s why I love it:
- No fees for paying online (who doesn’t love saving money?)
- Get billing notifications so you never miss a due date
- Report outages directly through the app
- Option to go paperless (save them trees!)
- Track your energy usage to help manage your consumption
SmartHub is available both as a web portal and mobile app, so you can access it wherever you are I personally use the app since it lets me pay bills even when I’m on vacation or away from home
Pay Now: For the Non-Registered User
Don’t want to register for a SmartHub account? No problem! Choptank offers a Pay Now option that’s super fast and convenient for one-time payments. I’ve used this when helping my parents pay their bill and it literally takes less than 2 minutes.
The best part? You don’t need to register with SmartHub to use this feature. Just have your account number ready, and you’re good to go!
Browser Compatibility Update!
Important note for all you Internet Explorer fans (if you’re still out there) – SmartHub no longer supports IE due to security vulnerabilities.
The supported browsers include:
- Chrome (version 40.0 or later)
- Firefox (version 33.0 or later)
- Microsoft Edge (version 15.0 or later)
- Safari (version 10.0 or later)
- iOS (version 9.3 or later)
If your browser isn’t supported, you’ll get a message saying “Browser Not Supported.” I personally recommend Chrome or Edge for the best experience.
Automatic Payment Options: Set It and Forget It
Auto Pay Through SmartHub
If you’re like me and occasionally forget due dates, Auto Pay is a lifesaver! I set this up last year and haven’t worried about a late payment since.
Through SmartHub, you can set up automatic payments using your preferred payment method. The system will automatically deduct the amount on your bill’s due date. Just remember to make sure there’s enough money in your account!
Level Billing Payment Plan
Trying to budget more effectively? Choptank’s Level Billing option might help. This plan averages out your payments throughout the year, so you pay roughly the same amount each month rather than dealing with seasonal spikes.
The Co-op re-evaluates your payment plan every 4 months to ensure accuracy. I haven’t personally used this option, but my neighbor swears by it for managing his winter heating costs.
To enroll in Level Billing, call the Member Service Center at 1-877-892-0001.
Phone Payment Options: Old School But Effective
Automated Member Service Line
Sometimes the simplest solutions work best. Choptank’s automated payment line at 1-844-975-2746 is perfect for making quick payments by phone.
When using this service:
- Have your Co-op account number ready
- Use a touch-tone phone
- Follow the voice prompts (they’ll instruct you to push the # key at certain times)
You can pay by Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or even by check with no additional fees! The system also allows you to check your last bill amount, view recent payments, and update your phone number.
In-Person and Mail Options: For the Traditional Folks
Payment by Mail
If you prefer the traditional route, you can always mail your payment to:
P.O. Box 430
Denton, MD 21629
Just be sure to include your payment stub with a check or money order (no cash, please!) and write your account number on the check.
Drop Boxes
Need to drop off a payment after hours? Choptank has convenient drop boxes at two locations:
- Regional Service Center – 6520 Walston Switch Rd, Salisbury, MD
- Choptank Electric Cooperative Headquarters – 10384 River Rd, Denton, MD
Just remember that payments made through drop boxes are posted on the next business day.
Local Offices
You can also pay in person at Choptank offices Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm:
- Headquarters in Denton (10384 River Rd)
- Regional Service Center in Salisbury (6520 Walston Switch Rd)
One important note: as of January 1, 2022, the Denton drive-thru is closed. Also, Choptank offices no longer have credit card swipe machines due to PCI regulations. If you want to pay by card, you’ll need to use one of the other methods.
New Option: MoneyGram Locations
This is a newer option that I just discovered! You can now pay your Choptank Electric bill at any MoneyGram location, including Walmart and CVS pharmacies.
There is a $1.50 transaction fee for this service, but payments are posted between 7:00 am and 9:00 pm, seven days a week. This could be super handy if you’re already shopping at Walmart and remember your bill is due!
Special Billing Services for Unique Situations
Bill Extender
If you receive state/government issued checks and struggle to meet bill due dates, you might qualify for the Bill Extender Plan. This allows Choptank to extend the due date of your bill in accordance with Maryland Code provisions.
Bill Explainer
Not sure what all those charges on your bill mean? Choptank offers bill explainers, including an interactive explanation of a residential bill, on their Rates page. This helped me understand the breakdown of my energy charges when I first became a member.
Tips for Hassle-Free Bill Payment
From my personal experience, here are some tips to make your Choptank Electric bill paying experience smoother:
- Set reminders on your phone or calendar if you’re not using Auto Pay
- Keep your account number handy – you’ll need it for most payment methods
- Check payment posting times – some methods don’t post until the next business day
- Consider paperless billing through SmartHub to reduce clutter
- Update your contact information regularly so you receive important notifications
What To Do If You’re Having Trouble Paying
We all go through tough times. If you’re struggling to pay your electric bill, Choptank offers several options:
- Contact the Member Service Center at 1-877-892-0001 to discuss payment arrangements
- Ask about the Bill Extender Plan if you receive government assistance
- Look into energy assistance programs (available on Choptank’s Resources section)
