Understanding Your Bethany Utility Bill
Your Bethany utility bill typically includes charges for:
- Water
- Sewer
- Sanitation (trash collection)
Water Rates
Bethany has announced water rate increases effective January 1, 2025. The city bills water in 1,000 gallon increments. Something I found interesting – if you use 3,200 gallons, you’re only billed for 3,000 gallons!
Sewer Charges
For residential accounts, your sewer charges are calculated based on a winter average of water usage. This is good news because it means your summer lawn watering won’t increase your sewer bill!
Commercial accounts are billed based on actual monthly water usage. All accounts are charged a minimum of 1,000 gallons per month.
What If My Bill Is Too High?
We’ve all had that moment of shock opening a utility bill. If your bill seems unusually high, here’s what to do:
- Request a re-read: Contact customer service at (405) 789-2146 to request a meter re-read or take a photo of your meter and send it to them
- Check for leaks: Even a small toilet leak can waste thousands of gallons
- Payment arrangements: Ask if you qualify to set up payment arrangements
- Leak adjustment: See if you qualify for a cost-sharing leak adjustment
Leak Adjustments
If you experienced a leak, Bethany offers a cost-sharing adjustment plan for leaks up to 30,000 gallons. To apply:
- Contact customer service for the form
- Return the notarized form with receipts showing the repair
- Keep paying your bill until the adjustment is processed
- The adjustment will apply to only one month’s bill

FAQ About Bethany Utility Bills
Why was my bill estimated?
Sometimes due to weather, obstructions, or staffing issues, the city cannot get an actual reading on every water meter. Don’t worry – they’ll “true-up” your usage the next time your meter is read.
Why does my bill stay the same for several months?
Since water is billed in 1,000 gallon increments, consistent usage might result in identical bills for several months. For example, if you use 3,200 gallons each month, you’ll be billed for 3,000 gallons. After five months, the accumulated extra usage will show up as 4,000 gallons on your fifth bill.
Why is my water bill higher than my neighbor’s when I have a smaller family?
Water consumption depends on many factors:
- How often and how long you shower
- How frequently you wash clothes and dishes
- Whether you water your lawn
- How efficient your appliances and toilets are
What about the ambulance service fee on my utility bill?
Many residents wonder about this. Bethany contracts with Pafford (formerly Samaritan) for ambulance services. The fee on your bill is an assessment program, but Pafford will still bill for services provided. They will bill your insurance and you’ll only be responsible for deductibles or co-pays per your insurance policy.
Water Conservation Tips
Want to lower your bill? Here are some tips the city recommends:
-
Indoor Conservation:
- Fix leaky faucets and toilets
- Install low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators
- Only run full loads in your dishwasher and washing machine
-
Outdoor Conservation:
- Water your lawn early morning or evening to reduce evaporation
- Consider drought-tolerant plants for Oklahoma landscapes
- Install smart irrigation controllers and sensors
- Create a rain garden for your property
One leaky toilet can waste up to 4,000 gallons per day! That’s like flushing your money down the drain!
