Post date |

Are you tired of stressing about your electricity bill deadlines? Wondering how to make your Delta-Montrose Electric Association payments without the hassle? I’ve got your back! As a member of this community-powered co-op, I understand the frustration of complicated payment systems. Today, I’m breaking down all your DMEA bill pay options so you can choose what works best for your lifestyle.

The Many Ways to Pay Your DMEA Bill

DMEA (Delta-Montrose Electric Association) understands that everyone’s financial situation is different. That’s why they’ve created multiple convenient payment methods that fit various lifestyles. Whether you prefer digital solutions or traditional payment methods, DMEA has got you covered.

1. SmartHub Online Payments

The quickest and most convenient way to handle your DMEA bill is through their online portal called SmartHub This 24/7 system lets you

  • View your current and past bills
  • Make one-time payments
  • Schedule future payments
  • Track your energy usage
  • Set up account alerts

To get started with SmartHub:

  1. Visit dmea.smarthub.coop/ui/
  2. Click on “New User” if you haven’t registered before
  3. Follow the simple registration process
  4. Log in anytime to manage your account

I personally love using SmartHub because I can check my usage patterns and pay my bill at midnight if I suddenly remember it’s due tomorrow!

2. Autopay – Set It and Forget It

If you’re like me and sometimes forget due dates Autopay might be your new best friend. With this program DMEA automatically deducts your monthly bill from your bank account or charges it to your credit card.

How to set up Autopay:

  1. Log in to SmartHub
  2. Go to the “Bill & Pay” menu tab
  3. Select “Auto Pay Program”
  4. Under “Actions,” click “Sign Up For Auto Pay”
  5. Choose either a new card, bank account, or existing card
  6. Verify your information and submit

The best part? When you combine Autopay with paperless billing, you’ll save $2 on your bill! Who doesn’t love saving a little extra cash?

3. Pay By Phone

Sometimes websites can be confusing, and I get it. That’s why DMEA offers a simple phone payment option. Just call 877-687-3632 and follow the automated system instructions. It’s super easy and takes just a few minutes.

4. Traditional Mail Payments

If you prefer the classic approach you can still mail your payment to

PO Box 1267
Grand Junction, CO 81502

Just remember to allow enough time for mail delivery to avoid late fees!

5. In-Person Payments

Some folks just feel better handling money transactions face-to-face. DMEA has got you covered with multiple in-person payment locations:

DMEA Offices:

  • Montrose: 11925 6300 Road, Montrose, CO 81401
  • Read: 21191 H 75 Road, Delta, Colorado 81416

Self-Service Payment Kiosks:

  • Located in the entryways of both DMEA offices
  • Hotchkiss Chamber of Commerce Info Booth
  • Cedaredge Town Hall (open during town hall business hours)

6. Community Payment Locations

DMEA has partnered with MoneyGram and Western Union to offer additional payment locations throughout the community:

  • City Market
  • Family Dollar
  • Dollar General
  • Walgreens
  • Walmart
  • Safeway
  • Dinero Rapido

This is super convenient if you’re already out shopping and remember your bill is due soon!

Special Billing Programs to Make Life Easier

Besides the various payment methods, DMEA offers special billing programs designed to fit different financial situations.

My Choice: Pay-As-You-Go

This is a game-changer for many members! My Choice is a prepaid electricity program where you:

  • Pay for electricity before you use it
  • Make payments in any amount, anytime
  • Receive notifications when your balance is low (about 5 days worth of electricity)
  • Avoid disconnect/reconnect fees
  • Never worry about late fees or collection fees

If your power does get disconnected due to a zero balance, you can have it turned back on within minutes by making a payment – even at 3 AM on a Sunday!

The My Choice program even helps if you have a past-due balance. You can transfer up to $500 of past-due amounts to the program. When you make payments, a portion goes toward your past balance (about 30%), and the rest buys new electricity.

To sign up, you’ll need to visit a DMEA office in person. Save time by downloading the My Choice application form from their website first!

Budget Billing: Predictable Monthly Payments

Do those winter heating bills or summer cooling costs throw your budget into chaos? Budget Billing might be your solution.

With this program, DMEA calculates your average monthly usage based on the previous year and creates a fixed monthly payment amount. This evens out those seasonal spikes that can wreck your budget.

Once a year, DMEA does a “true-up”:

  • If you paid for more electricity than you used, your account gets credited
  • If you used more than you paid for, you’ll be billed for the difference
  • There are NO penalty fees for using more electricity than originally calculated

You can sign up online through SmartHub or call 877-687-3632 to get started.

Paperless Billing: Save Trees and $2

Going paperless is a win-win – it’s better for the environment AND saves you money! When you sign up for paperless billing:

  • You’ll receive monthly bill notifications by email
  • You can view and pay your bill through SmartHub
  • You’ll get an electronic version of the monthly newsletter
  • You’ll save $2 on your bill

That’s $24 in savings per year just for skipping the paper bill! I signed up for this immediately when I found out about the discount.

Understanding Your DMEA Bill

Starting May 2025, DMEA began showing your household’s “demand” on your bill. This is interesting data that shows the maximum amount of electricity your home draws at one specific point during the month, measured in kilowatts (kW).

When you run multiple appliances at the same time (like your dishwasher, dryer, and AC unit), your demand increases. Currently, DMEA doesn’t charge extra for high demand, but they track it to ensure they have enough electricity for everyone.

This information can help you manage your energy use better. For example, you might decide to run your dishwasher after your dryer finishes instead of running both simultaneously, which could reduce your overall electricity costs.

Tips for Managing Your DMEA Account

After years of working with my own DMEA account, I’ve learned some helpful tricks:

  1. Download the SmartHub App – It’s free and makes managing your account super easy from your phone.

  2. Sign up for account alerts – Get notified when your bill is ready, when payment is due, or when usage exceeds your set threshold.

  3. Consider combining programs – Autopay + Paperless Billing is a great combo that saves you $2 and eliminates the worry of missing payments.

  4. Check your usage regularly – SmartHub shows detailed usage information that can help you identify energy hogs in your home.

  5. Contact customer service with questions – DMEA’s friendly staff is available at 877-687-3632 or [email protected] if you’re confused about anything.

Why I Love Being a DMEA Member

DMEA isn’t just any utility company – it’s a cooperative that’s been serving our valley since 1938. With more than 36,000 meters across 7 districts, they’re committed to providing reliable electricity while giving back to the community.

As a member, I appreciate their focus on renewable energy projects, including local hydro and solar initiatives. Plus, their Operation Round Up program lets members round up their bills to support local charities and families in need.

Did you know DMEA also offers scholarship opportunities and youth programs? The Youth Leadership Camp applications are currently open as of November 12, 2025!

Final Thoughts: Choose What Works for You

Everyone’s financial situation and preferences are different. The beauty of DMEA’s various payment options is that you can select what works best for YOUR life.

If you’re tech-savvy, SmartHub and Autopay might be perfect. If you prefer face-to-face interaction, the local payment centers are there for you. And if you’re on a tight budget with fluctuating income, the My Choice pay-as-you-go program could be life-changing.

Whatever method you choose, DMEA has made it easy to stay on top of your electricity payments. No more stressing about due dates or seasonal bill spikes!
