MoneyGram Express Payment – You can now pay your bill at the service desk in-store at select locations such as Wal-Mart and CVS locations nation-wide. If you are a budget conscience person, this is a great option to know what you will be paying every month, and to stay on track with little to no surprises. Our Budget Billing program is completely free for members and can be joined at any time throughout the year. Accounts must have a zero balance, be in good standing, and have at least 12 months of service history at that location. Members must also sign up for Autopay to qualify. Please note, Budget Billing is not a discount program – just a different way to pay.

Projecting monthly amounts is just as uncertain as one would be in predicting weather a year in advance, so we now do the recalculations every four months. The recalculation months are May, September and January, with new calculated amounts going into effect for June, October and February bills. The recalculated amount will be listed on your bill in the message box (the month before made effective) and the amount will be for the following four consecutive months. Doing the recalculations every four months will ensure that you not only stay on track but avoid having a large credit or balance due at true-up month. Should you ever pay more than what is due, the extra amount will go towards the following month’s budget amount, unless you let us know otherwise.

Hey there fellow Egyptian Electric members! I’ve been with Egyptian Electric Cooperative for over 5 years now, and I’ve tried literally EVERY way to pay my bill. Today I’m sharing all the insider tips and tricks to make your bill-paying experience as smooth as possible.

Let’s face it – nobody enjoys paying bills, but Egyptian Electric has made it pretty darn convenient Whether you’re a tech lover or prefer the old-school methods, they’ve got you covered!

Quick Summary of Payment Options

Before I dive into the details, here’s a quick look at all your options:

  • Pay online through SmartHub or the Pay Now portal
  • Pay-by-Phone system available 24/7
  • Automatic drafts from your account
  • VanillaDirect Pay at retail locations
  • MoneyGram Express Payment
  • On-site and off-site payment kiosks
  • PrePay program
  • Traditional methods (mail or in-person)

Now let’s break down each method so you can find what works best for YOU.

Online Payment Options – The Modern Way to Pay

SmartHub – My Personal Favorite!

I absolutely LOVE using SmartHub for managing my Egyptian Electric account. It’s super convenient and offers way more than just bill pay. Here’s why it’s my go-to:

  • Available 24/7 from any device
  • Pay with checking account or credit/debit card
  • Set up recurring payments (no more late fees!)
  • Track your energy usage
  • View billing history
  • Report outages

You can access SmartHub through:

Pay Now Portal – Quick One-Time Payments

If you just want to make a single payment without creating an account, the Pay Now portal on the Egyptian Electric homepage is perfect. I use this sometimes when I’m in a rush and just need to make a quick payment.

Phone Payment Options – No Internet Required

Automated Phone System

Egyptian Electric offers a 24/7 automated phone system at (800) 606-1505. It’s actually really easy to use and accepts:

  • Visa
  • MasterCard
  • Discover
  • E-check

The system is available in both English and Spanish, which is pretty cool!

During business hours, you can speak with a customer service rep, but after hours, the automated system takes over.

Important Note: As of January 2021, Egyptian Electric no longer accepts credit card payments through live representatives due to security concerns. This helps protect us all from credit card fraud!

Automatic Payment Options – Set It and Forget It!

Automatic Drafts

This is perfect for busy folks like me who sometimes forget to pay bills on time You can set up automatic payments in two ways

  1. For credit/debit cards: Sign up through SmartHub
  2. For checking/savings accounts: Complete the Automatic Bank Draft Authorization Form

I’ve been using automatic drafts for the last 3 years, and it’s been a lifesaver! No more late fees or scrambling to pay at the last minute.

Budget Billing Program

If you hate the unpredictability of your bill amount (those summer AC bills, am I right?), the Budget Billing program might be perfect for you. It evens out your payments throughout the year.

A few things to know:

  • It’s completely FREE
  • Your account must have zero balance
  • You need at least 12 months of service history
  • Must sign up for AutoPay
  • Recalculations happen every four months (May, September, January)

Retail Location Payment Options – When You’re Out and About

VanillaDirect Pay

This is great if you prefer to pay with cash while you’re already out shopping. Just scan the barcode from your SmartHub account or payment stub at participating retailers like:

  • Walmart
  • Walgreen’s
  • Dollar General
  • Family Dollar
  • Circle K
  • CVS

Just be aware there’s a $1.50 vendor fee for each transaction.

MoneyGram Express Payment

Another option for paying while shopping is MoneyGram, available at select Walmart and CVS locations nationwide. There’s a $1.50 fee per transaction and they only accept debit or cash.

Kiosk Payment Options – Quick and Convenient

On-Site Kiosk

Egyptian Electric has a 24/7 kiosk outside their Murphysboro office at 1732 Finney Road. I’ve used this a couple times when I was driving by, and it’s super easy!

The kiosk accepts:

  • Cash (no change given)
  • E-checks
  • Visa, MasterCard, and Discover

Off-Site Kiosks

There are two off-site kiosks for cash-only payments:

  1. Marketplace Shell in Carbondale

    • 2301 N. Reed Station Road
    • Open various hours throughout the week
  2. Neighborhood Co-op Grocery in Carbondale

    • 1815 W. Main Street (Murdale Shopping Center)
    • Open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily (hours may change)

The best part? No transaction fees for using these kiosks!

Traditional Payment Methods – Old School but Reliable

Pay by Mail

Sometimes the classic methods are best. Simply detach the payment stub from your bill and mail it with a check or money order. Just allow about 10 business days for delivery.

Pay in Person

You can stop by the Murphysboro office during business hours (8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday) or use their drive-thru window. There’s also an after-hours drop box on the south side of the building.

PrePay Program – Pay As You Go

This is a unique option where you pay on your meter as you go. It’s like prepaid phone service, but for your electricity! Call (800) 606-1505 to learn more about signing up.

BEWARE: Avoid Third-Party Payment Sites!

One important warning! Egyptian Electric has noticed some members accidentally using DOXO.com to pay their bills. This site is NOT affiliated with Egyptian Electric and may charge extra fees.

Even worse, payments through DOXO might be delayed, potentially resulting in late fees or even disconnection. Always use the official Egyptian Electric payment methods I’ve outlined above.

My Personal Experience

I’ve tried most of these payment methods over the years, and I have to say that SmartHub is by far the easiest. I love being able to check my usage and pay my bill all from my phone while lying on the couch!

But I’ve also used the on-site kiosk when I happened to be driving by, and it worked great for a quick cash payment.

Final Thoughts

Egyptian Electric Cooperative has really gone out of their way to make bill payment convenient for everyone. Whether you’re tech-savvy or prefer traditional methods, there’s an option that’ll work for you.

Do you use any of these methods to pay your electric bill? Which one works best for you? I’d love to hear about your experiences!

Until next time,
Your friendly neighborhood Egyptian Electric member

Automatic Bank Draft Option

Egyptian Electric Cooperative will continue to send a monthly, standard paper billing statement, or a digital version should you sign up for electronic billing via e-mail. On the due date of your bill, funds will be automatically transferred from your designated account to the Cooperative. In other words, the funds stay in your account until the last moment. Your monthly bill statement will allow you ample time to update your account register and ensure you have adequate funds in the account.

Should you disagree with the amount of your bill, please contact the our Billing Department at least five working days before the bill due date. Should there not be ample funds in the account to cover the bill, you may incur fees from your financial institution and the Cooperative, the same as an insufficient funds check.

If you are like many of us today, your life is packed full of responsibilities and duties. Selecting an automatic payment option can save you the time and hassle of writing and mailing checks on time. It may also save you money by avoiding check, postage or late fees. If you travel frequently or for extended periods, Automatic Payment provides the comfort of knowing your account is always paid on time.

If you are a registered e-bill member through the SmartHub internet member care portal, just login to the system by clicking on the Pay Bill icon on the home page. Once logged in, go to the My Profile tab and click on the Update My Bank Account or Credit Card Information. Select to either add a new credit/debit card or a new bank account.

If you are not a registered e-bill member or choose not to, just print and complete the Automatic Bank Draft Authorization, below. Enclose a voided check with the form if you wish deduction from a checking account and mail it with your next payment. Please allow up to two billing cycles before Automatic Payment begins. Your bill will indicate when automatic payments starts. See below for the printable form.
