DPU maintains a free, cloud-based Utilities Self-Service Portal through its Munis Tyler billing software. From a computer, DPU customers can register their account in the portal to be able to:

Are you tired of scrambling to pay your Los Alamos utilities bill at the last minute? I’ve been there too! As a resident of Los Alamos County, I’ve explored all the different ways to handle those monthly electric, gas, water, wastewater, and refuse service payments Today, I’m sharing everything you need to know about the payment options available through the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU)

Why Los Alamos Residents Need Multiple Payment Options

Los Alamos County understands that different residents have different preferences when it comes to paying bills. Some of us prefer the convenience of online payments, while others like the traditional approach of mailing checks or paying in person. Whatever your preference, the DPU has got you covered with several payment options.

The 6 Ways to Pay Your Los Alamos Utilities Bill

1. Online Through the Utilities Self-Service Portal

In November 2020, the DPU launched a game-changing Utilities Self-Service Portal. This free cloud-based portal gives customers 24/7 access to their utility accounts from personal computers or tablets

What can you do with the portal?

  • Manage your account information
  • Access past and present utility bills
  • View payment history
  • Make online credit or debit card payments

To get started with the portal, visit https://ladpu.com/Utilities-Portal and follow the registration instructions. You’ll need your Customer ID and Account numbers, which can be found on your utility bill.

2. One-Time Online Payment Through Paymentus

Don’t want to create an account? No problem! You can make a one-time payment through Paymentus, the DPU’s bill payment vendor. Simply visit the Paymentus website and enter your DPU Customer ID and Account numbers (found on your utility bill), along with your payment information.

This is perfect for those times when your regular payment method falls through or you just want a quick, no-fuss way to pay your bill.

3. Pay by Phone

For those days when you’re away from your computer or just prefer talking to someone, you can pay your utilities bill over the phone. Just call Paymentus at (866) 417-0694. Have your utility bill handy, as you’ll need to enter your DPU Customer ID and Account numbers, which can be found on the upper right corner of your bill.

4. Automatic Payments

This is my personal favorite! If you’re like me and sometimes forget to pay bills on time, signing up for automatic payments can be a lifesaver. The DPU will draft payments 20 days after your utility bill is issued from your bank, savings & loan, or credit union.

This method ensures you never miss a payment and don’t incur any late fees. It’s a “set it and forget it” approach that makes bill paying hassle-free.

5. Mail Your Payment

Some folks still prefer the traditional method of mailing a check. If that’s you, simply mail your payment to:

Los Alamos County
P.O. Box 99
Los Alamos, NM 87544

Just remember to allow enough time for mail delivery to ensure your payment arrives before the due date!

6. Pay in Person or at a Drop Box

If you enjoy the personal touch or want to make sure your payment is received immediately, you can pay in person at the Customer Care Center, located in the Municipal Building at 1000 Central Avenue, Los Alamos, NM 87544. The center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Additionally, there are two convenient drop boxes:

  • One located across the hall from the Customer Care Center (available Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.)
  • Another in the parking lot (available 24/7)

Customer Care staff retrieves payments from these drop boxes every business day at 5 p.m.

Utilities Self-Service Portal: A Game Changer

Let’s take a deeper dive into the Utilities Self-Service Portal, which was launched in November 2020. This portal has significantly improved the way customers can access their utility accounts.

The portal doesn’t change any of your personal settings, such as:

  • Email delivery of utility bills
  • Automatic payment programs
  • Budget billing
  • LA Green subscriptions

It simply provides an additional tool to access your utility information whenever it’s convenient for you. The portal connects you to the DPU’s Tyler Munis billing software, giving you comprehensive access to your account details.

What Services Does the Los Alamos DPU Bill Cover?

Tips for Managing Your Los Alamos Utilities Bill

Here are some tips I’ve found helpful for managing my utilities bill:

  1. Set reminders: If you’re not using automatic payments, set calendar reminders a few days before your bill is due.

  2. Budget for seasonal changes: Utility bills often increase during extreme weather months. Budget accordingly for higher winter heating and summer cooling costs.

  3. Consider budget billing: The DPU offers budget billing options that spread your costs evenly throughout the year, making it easier to budget.

  4. Check for leaks or inefficiencies: Unexpectedly high bills might indicate leaks or inefficiencies in your home. Regular maintenance checks can save you money.

  5. Explore conservation programs: The DPU often has programs to help residents reduce consumption and save money.

Why I Love the Online Portal Option

I’ve been using the online portal since it launched, and it’s been a game-changer for me. Before, I would sometimes misplace my paper bill or forget the due date. Now, I can quickly log in, check my balance, view my usage history, and make payments all in one place.

The ability to see past bills has also helped me track my usage patterns and identify ways to reduce consumption during peak months. Plus, the 24/7 accessibility means I can handle my utility bill management after work hours or on weekends when it’s most convenient for me.

The Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities has done an excellent job providing diverse payment options to meet the needs of all residents. Whether you’re tech-savvy and prefer online methods, or you appreciate the traditional approach of in-person or mail payments, there’s an option that will work for your lifestyle.

I’d recommend trying the Utilities Self-Service Portal if you haven’t already. The convenience of having all your account information at your fingertips is invaluable, and it makes managing your utilities bill so much simpler.
