Memphis Light Gas and Water (MLGW) provides utility services to residents and businesses in the Memphis area. Here’s what you need to know about your MLGW bill and account
Account Number Information
Your MLGW bill includes a 16-digit account number that you’ll need when doing business with them. This number has two parts:
- First 9 digits: Your customer number (stays with you even if you move)
- Last 7 digits: Premise number (specific to your address)
If you don’t have your account number handy, you can
- Call MLGW’s Customer Care Center at (901) 544-6549
- Email your request to [email protected] (be prepared to verify your identity)
Understanding Charges on Your Bill
Your MLGW bill may include charges for
- Utilities (electricity, gas, and water)
- Sewer services (provided by the City of Memphis)
- Solid waste disposal (provided by the City of Memphis)
- County fire protection fees (in applicable areas)
Though these additional services appear on your MLGW bill, they are provided by the City of Memphis and Shelby County, not MLGW directly.
Rate Information
- Residential gas and electric rates: Identical throughout Shelby County
- Water rates: Vary based on location
- Lower within Memphis city limits than in unincorporated areas
- Separate rates in Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, and Millington (operated by those municipalities)
Understanding Gas Prices and Adjustments
Gas prices fluctuate based on supply and demand in the market. MLGW uses a Purchased Gas Adjustment (PGA) to pass along increases and decreases in gas costs to customers. This adjustment began in 1993 following natural gas deregulation.
Similarly, for electricity, the Tennessee Valley Authority (MLGW’s electric supplier) implements a Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA) that appears as a line item under the electric section of your bill.
Online Account Management
MLGW offers online account management through their My Account portal. This allows you to:
- View and pay bills
- Check account status
- Access payment options
For payment options and assistance programs, visit the MLGW website for more information.
If you have additional questions about your MLGW bill, you can refer to their FAQ section on the website or contact their customer service directly.

More information regarding how cost estimates are calculated
- Cost estimates for services provided by out-of-network dentists (available in the out-of-network estimator) are based upon submitted claims data for out-of-network dentists. The data is based on actual, non-discounted charges that dentists have billed.
- Cost estimates are specific to geographic areas, as defined by the first three digits of a ZIP code (e.g., the geo ZIP for 12345 is 123).
- For members of Delta Dental of New Jersey, Delta Dental of Connecticut and Delta Dental of Idaho, you will see an estimate of your out of pocket cost. This estimate is based on the amounts charged by the dentist for the procedures in question and the amounts to be paid by your dental plan.

The Content cannot, and is not intended to, replace the relationship that you have with your health care professionals. The Content on this website is not medical advice. You should always talk to your health care professionals for information concerning diagnosis and treatment, including information regarding which drugs or treatment may be appropriate for you. Therefore, it is always best to confirm information with your health care professionals.
The Dental Care Cost Estimator sometimes groups together, into “treatment categories,” services that are often delivered together to address a particular dental problem. The description of different treatment categories, and the inclusion of particular services in a treatment category, is not advice that any particular treatment category is the right treatment for you or that you should not obtain any particular treatment. All of those matters are things that you should decide, in consultation with your dental care professionals. This cost estimator is intended for use in the 50 states, Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories. If you live outside the U.S., you may see information on this cost estimator about products or services that are not available or authorized in your country.
