Are you tired of forgetting to pay your Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority bill until that dreaded late notice arrives? I’ve been there too! After moving to Pittsburgh last year, I struggled with remembering to pay my water bill on time. But now I’ve mastered the PWSA bill payment system, and I’m excited to share everything I’ve learned with you.
What is PWSA and Why Do We Pay Them?
Before we dive into payment methods, let’s clarify what PWSA actually is. The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority provides water and sewer services to residents and businesses in Pittsburgh. They maintain the infrastructure that brings clean water to our homes and takes wastewater away.
When we pay our PWSA bills we’re paying for
- Clean, treated water delivered to our homes
- Sewer services for waste removal
- Maintenance of water mains and infrastructure
- Stormwater management
- Water quality testing and treatment
Online Payment Options: The Easiest Way to Pay
PWSA has made it super convenient to pay your bill online. There are two main ways to do this:
1. The Paperless Billing and Payment Portal
If you want to go fully digital (which I totally recommend!), you can enroll in PWSA’s electronic billing and payment portal This gives you several advantages
- Receive monthly bills via email instead of paper mail
- View your bill online anytime
- Make one-time payments
- Set up recurring payments (my personal favorite!)
- Manage account notifications
Residential customers can use credit cards, debit cards, or bank accounts for online payments through this portal. Commercial customers are limited to bank account payments.
2. The One-Time Payment Portal
Don’t want to create an account or sign up for paperless billing? No problem! PWSA offers a one-time payment option that’s super quick and easy. Just visit their One-Time Payment Portal, enter your information, and pay with your credit card, debit card, or bank account.
I personally used this option for the first few months before deciding to go paperless. It’s perfect for those who prefer not to create yet another online account.
Other Ways to Pay Your PWSA Bill
Not everyone likes paying bills online, and PWSA understands that. They offer several other payment methods:
By Phone
You can pay your PWSA bill over the phone, which is great when you’re in a rush or don’t have internet access Just call their customer service number at 412-255-2423 and follow the prompts.
With Zipcheck
Zipcheck is another payment option offered by PWSA. This service allows you to set up automatic payments from your bank account.
In Person with Cash
If you prefer to pay with cash, you can do so at various retail locations including:
- 7-Eleven
- Family Dollar
- Dollar General
- CVS Pharmacy
- Walgreens
- Walmart Supercenter MoneyCenter
This option is particularly helpful for folks who don’t have bank accounts or prefer to deal with cash.
My Personal PWSA Bill Pay Journey
When I first moved to Pittsburgh, I was overwhelmed with all the new bills and accounts I needed to manage. I missed my first PWSA payment deadline because the bill got lost in a stack of mail (oops!).
After that embarassing mistake, I decided to enroll in paperless billing. The setup process was surprisingly simple:
- I visited the PWSA website
- Clicked on the “Paperless Billing Portal” link
- Created an account using my email address
- Entered my account information from my water bill
- Set up automatic payments with my credit card
Now I get an email when my bill is ready, and the payment is automatically deducted from my account. I haven’t had to think about my water bill since, which is exactly how I like it!
Tips for Managing Your PWSA Bill
Check Your Water Usage
One cool feature of the PWSA online portal is the ability to check your water usage. This can help you identify possible leaks or ways to conserve water and lower your bill.
I once noticed my usage was unusually high, which led me to discover a leaky toilet that was wasting gallons of water every day. Fixing it saved me nearly $20 on my next bill!
Update Your Contact Information
Make sure PWSA has your current phone number and email address. This ensures you’ll receive important notifications about your account, service outages, or billing issues.
Set Up Alerts
You can set up alerts to notify you when:
- Your bill is ready
- A payment is due
- A payment has been processed
- Your water usage exceeds a certain amount
