UB Bill Pay: Your Complete Guide to Hassle-Free Payments in 2025

Post date |

Are you tired of stressing about paying your University at Buffalo bill? I’ve been there too! Let me walk you through everything you need to know about UB bill pay options, so you can focus on what really matters – your education.

Understanding Your UB Payment Options

When it comes to paying your University at Buffalo bill you have several convenient options. As a UB student myself for many years I’ve tried most of these methods and want to share what I’ve learned.

The University at Buffalo’s preferred payment method is online payment through their HUB Student Center. This makes sense since online payments post to your account in real-time, which is super helpful when you’re rushing to meet deadlines.

Online Payment Methods

UB offers two primary online payment methods:

  1. Credit Card Payments

    • Accepted cards: Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express
    • No service charge for credit card payments (which is awesome!)
    • Must be done online through HUB Student Center
    • Not accepted by mail, phone, or in-person at 1Capen
  2. eCheck Payments

    • Direct debit from your personal U.S. checking or savings account
    • No charge for this payment method
    • You’ll need your routing and account numbers handy

To make either payment type, follow these steps:

  • Log into MyUB using your UBITName and password
  • Click on HUB Student Center
  • Select “Billing / Payments”
  • Click “Payment Options”
  • You’ll be taken to QuikPAY
  • Click “View & Pay Accounts” to make your payment

International Students Payment Options

If you’re an international student like my roommate was, UB has partnered with Flywire to make the payment process easier. This service offers:

  • Multiple payment options
  • Excellent foreign exchange rates
  • Safe and accurate payment delivery

To use Flywire access it through your HUB Student Center following similar steps as above.

Mail-In Payment Option

If you prefer the old-school approach (like my dad still does), you can mail in your payment

  • Only checks and money orders are accepted via mail
  • Make checks payable to “University at Buffalo”
  • Include your UB Person Number
  • Allow 7 days for mailing to avoid late fees
  • A postmark before the due date won’t prevent late fees, so plan ahead!

Mail your payment to:

For overnight payments (non-USPS), use:

In-Person Payments

Important update for 2025: UB no longer accepts in-person payments at 1Capen for safety reasons. You’ll need to use one of the other methods listed.

The UB Payment Plan Option

If you’re like me and find it difficult to pay the full amount at once, UB offers a payment plan that lets you spread your tuition and fees across multiple payments each semester. The best part? It’s interest-free!

You can choose to pay in 3, 4, or 5 installments. This has been a lifesaver for me in past semesters when financial aid was delayed.

Payment Deadlines and Late Fees

Keep these important timing details in mind:

  • Payments received before 6:00 p.m. (EST) are credited to your account that day
  • Payments after 6:00 p.m. (EST) are credited the following day
  • To avoid a late fee, payments must be posted by 6:00 p.m. (EST) on the due date
  • For release of an unpaid bill hold, allow 24-48 hours after payment posts

Using 529 College Savings Plans

If you have a New York State 529 Savings Plan:

  1. Request a withdrawal through www.nysaves.org
  2. Enter UB’s school code: 002837 and campus code: 002837/00
  3. Make your request well ahead of UB’s published tuition due dates

For other states’ 529 plans:

  • Many can send payments directly to UB through HESC
  • Use school code 002837 and select “State University of New York at Buffalo”
  • Campus code is 002837/00

What About Refunds?

If you overpay and have a credit balance (happened to me twice!), you’ll receive an automatic refund beginning the third week of classes. To get your refund faster, sign up for direct deposit through your HUB Student Center.

Common UB Bill Pay Issues and Solutions

Registration Failures on UBMax

If you encounter errors during registration, it’s typically due to:

  • Misspelled information or case sensitivity issues
  • Browser pop-up blockers
  • Security settings

Browser-Specific Solutions

For Microsoft Internet Explorer:

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab
  • Under Security, check options for TLS 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2
  • Click OK and restart browser

For Google Chrome:

  • Click Alt+F and select Settings
  • Scroll down to Show advanced settings
  • Under Network, click Change proxy settings

Returned Checks and Declined Cards

If your payment is refused by your bank:

  • UB will add $20.00 in charges to your account
  • You may also face a late payment fee
  • You’ll need to make future payments with credit card or secured funds

If your credit card is declined, you’ll be notified, and a late payment fee may apply.

Wire Transfer Guidelines

An important note about wire transfers – they shouldn’t exceed your semester cost of attendance. If you need money for personal expenses, wire it directly to your local bank account instead.

My Personal UB Bill Pay Experience

When I first started at UB, I was completely lost when it came to paying my bill. I missed a payment deadline my first semester and got hit with late fees – a painful lesson!

After that experience, I switched to the payment plan option which helped me budget better. I also set calendar reminders for all payment due dates on my phone.

I’ve found that the eCheck option works best for me – it’s quick, has no fees, and posts to my account immediately. The direct deposit for refunds was also a game-changer when I accidentally overpaid one semester.
