BruinBill, the UCLA campus billing platform, is where you can manage and pay for registration fees, campus charges, housing, transportation fees and more. At the beginning of each quarter, financial aid will be applied to your housing charges in BruinBill, after your tuition and fees are covered. BruinBill is available 24/7; just log on to MyUCLA (you’ll need your UCLA Logon ID).
Mandatory tuition, housing, and other fees are assessed prior to the beginning of each academic term. Other miscellaneous fees, such as bookstore purchases, may post to your bill throughout the term. You can find a charge’s due date on your BruinBill, but usually, payment is due on the 20th of the month following the posting date of the charge. If the 20th falls on a weekend or a holiday, the due date is the last business day before the 20th.
Note: Posted tuition, fees and charges are estimates based on currently approved amounts. These figures may not be final. Actual tuition, fees and charges are subject to change by the Regents of the University of California and could be affected by State funding reductions. Accordingly, final approved fees and charges (and thus a student’s final balance due) may differ from the amounts shown.
Bruin Direct is the fastest way to get a BruinBill refund (e.g. financial aid refund). Members are refunded by direct deposit into a U.S. checking or savings account. You’ll get your funds in 2–3 business days and avoid waiting for mailed checks. Sign up directly on your BruinBill by clicking “Enroll” under “My BruinDirect.”
With Third Party View you can authorize a third party, such as a parent, to access your BruinBill account. They’ll be able to make payments, sign up to receive email reminders and get details about your billing account (which can only be disclosed to you or a designated third party).
By enrolling in BruinPay Plan (BPP), you can spread your term tuition and other term fees into monthly installments. Check your BruinBill to see if you’re eligible for the plan and enroll under “My BruinPay Plan.” You must enroll in BPP for each term for which you wish to have an installment plan.
Are you a new Bruin feeling overwhelmed by the UCLA billing system? Or maybe you’re a parent trying to figure out how to help your student manage their UCLA expenses? You’ve come to the right place! As someone who’s navigated the UCLA billing maze I’m here to share everything I know about UCLA bill pay options.
UCLA uses a system called BruinBill for most student-related charges, but there’s also myUCLAhealth for medical bills. I’ll walk you through both systems, payment deadlines, and some handy tips to avoid those pesky late fees.
Understanding BruinBill: Your Main UCLA Payment Portal
BruinBill is UCLA’s campus billing platform where students manage and pay for:
- Registration fees
- Tuition
- Housing charges
- Campus transportation fees
- Other university-related expenses
The good news is that BruinBill is available 24/7 through MyUCLA. You’ll need your UCLA Logon ID to access it, which makes it convenient to check your balance or make payments anytime.
When Are UCLA Bills Due?
UCLA operates on a quarterly system, and knowing payment deadlines is crucial Here are the main tuition and registration fee payment deadlines
| Term | Payment Deadline |
|---|---|
| Fall Quarter | September 20 |
| Winter Quarter | December 20 |
| Spring Quarter | March 20 |
For most charges, the due date is the 20th of the month following when the charge was posted If the 20th falls on a weekend or holiday, you’ll need to pay by the last business day before the 20th.
One thing to remember – payments must be completed by 5:00 p.m. PT if paying online or during business hours if paying in person.
How to Pay Your UCLA BruinBill
You’ve got several options for paying your UCLA bill, so let’s break them down:
1. Online Through MyUCLA (Most Popular Method)
This is how I usually pay my bills. Just log into MyUCLA, go to your BruinBill landing page, and select “Make a Payment.” The system will redirect you to a payment page where you can choose from several payment methods:
-
Bank Account (Recommended): This is my go-to method because there’s no service fee! Payments post instantly, but you must have a U.S. checking or savings account.
-
Credit/Debit Card: While convenient, be aware that a non-refundable transaction fee applies to each payment. Still, the payment posts instantly.
-
International Payment Methods: UCLA offers options through Flywire and Convera for international students. These include bank transfers and international credit cards (though service fees apply). I’d recommend comparing rates across vendors to find your best option.
2. In-Person Payments
If you prefer the old-school approach, you can pay in person at the Payment Solutions & Compliance Office in Murphy Hall (Room 1125). They accept:
- Paper checks
- Cashier’s checks
- Money orders
- Cash (though they advise against large cash payments for safety reasons)
Just note they don’t accept credit/debit cards in person, which is kinda frustrating sometimes.
3. Mail-In Payments
You can also mail payments to UCLA, but keep in mind it takes up to 10 business days to process once received. Make checks payable to “UC Regents” and include:
- Student’s name
- Nine-digit university ID number
- Term
- BruinBill account type
The mailing address is:
UCLA Payment Solutions & Compliance OfficeBox 957089, 1125 Murphy Hall405 Hilgard Ave.Los Angeles, CA 90095-7089
Helpful BruinBill Services You Should Know About
UCLA offers several services that can make managing your bill easier:
Bruin Direct
This is a game-changer for getting refunds quickly! Instead of waiting for a check in the mail, Bruin Direct deposits refunds directly into your U.S. checking or savings account within 2-3 business days. To enroll, just click “Enroll” under “My BruinDirect” on your BruinBill.
Third Party View
This feature has saved my parents and me so much hassle! You can authorize a third party, like a parent, to access your BruinBill account. They can:
- Make payments
- Sign up for email reminders
- View details about your billing account
This is especially useful if your parents are helping with your education expenses.
BruinPay Plan (BPP)
If paying the entire term’s fees at once is too much, the BruinPay Plan lets you spread your tuition and fees into monthly installments. You’ll need to check your BruinBill to see if you’re eligible and enroll under “My BruinPay Plan.” Just remember that you need to enroll in BPP for each term you want to use it.
Financial Aid and Your BruinBill
If you’re receiving financial aid, you might be wondering how it affects your bill payment. Here’s the scoop:
-
If your financial aid fully covers your tuition and fees, you don’t need to make a payment. Your aid will automatically apply to your account at the beginning of each quarter.
-
For housing charges, financial aid is applied to BruinBill AFTER your tuition and fees are covered.
-
If your aid doesn’t fully cover all charges, you’re still responsible for paying the remaining balance by the deadline.
I learned this the hard way my freshman year – always check your BruinBill regularly to see your actual balance due after aid is applied!
Paying UCLA Health Bills
UCLA Health bills are separate from your student BruinBill. The myUCLAhealth system handles medical bills through its own portal.
To pay as a guest, you can visit the myUCLAhealth Guest Pay page. You’ll need to provide information about the guarantor (the person responsible for paying the bill) and the visit account (how your charges are grouped together).
If you want a more convenient experience:
- Sign in to your existing myUCLAhealth account to use saved payment methods
- Or sign up for myUCLAhealth to save payment methods, learn more about your bill, sign up for payment plans, and review payment history
Tips to Avoid Late Fees and Problems
Throughout my time at UCLA, I’ve learned a few tricks to stay on top of payments:
-
Check your BruinBill regularly – New charges can appear throughout the term
-
Update your email address in MyUCLA – This ensures you receive bi-weekly payment reminders
-
Set calendar reminders for payment deadlines
-
Monitor your account for six months after leaving UCLA – Sometimes charges can appear after you graduate or leave
-
Pay attention to the Student Billing Calendar for important dates
-
Be aware that unpaid fees can lead to:
- Late fees
- Account holds
- Dropped classes
What If I Have Questions About My Bill?
If you’re scratching your head about a charge or have other billing questions, the Student Accounts office is your best resource. They can provide information about billing policies and help resolve issues.
I’ve found that calling or visiting in person often gets faster results than email when dealing with complex billing questions.
Final Thoughts
Managing your UCLA bill payments might seem overwhelming at first, but once you understand the systems and deadlines, it becomes routine. BruinBill for student expenses and myUCLAhealth for medical charges each have their own portals but offer similar payment options.
The key is to stay organized, pay attention to deadlines, and regularly check your accounts for new charges. And remember, if you’re receiving financial aid, it will apply to your tuition first, then housing, but you’re responsible for any remaining balance.
We’ve all been there – figuring out how to pay for college is stressful! But with these tools and tips, hopefully you can spend less time worrying about bills and more time enjoying your UCLA experience.
