Complete Guide to UMD Bill Pay: Everything Students & Parents Need to Know

Post date |

Pay your bill on time to avoid late payment fees and/or a hold on your record. Your “Due Now” amount must be paid by your due date. If needed, see how to view your student account balance.

If you enroll in classes on more than one University of Minnesota campus, youll have separate billing, due dates, and payments for each campus.

There are several ways to pay the balance due. Paying online in MyU (via eCheck, credit/debit card, or international wire transfer) is the fastest.

There is no additional fee from the University if you choose to transfer funds electronically from your checking or savings account.

You will need your banks routing number and your account number (see illustration). These numbers can be found at the bottom of a personal check. Otherwise, contact your bank to obtain the correct numbers. When you have this information, select the “eCheck” option when making your payment. You cannot use the numbers found on your debit card for an eCheck payment.

You may pay online with a Visa, MasterCard, DISCOVER, or American Express credit or debit card. However, you will be required to pay a separate, non-refundable service fee of 2.85% (for domestically issued credit cards) or 4.25% (for internationally issued credit cards) of the payment amount at the time of each credit or debit card payment. This fee is assessed by the vendor contracted by the University to process credit or debit card payments. The University does not receive any part of the service fee. If you are planning to pay with your debit card, consider using the eCheck option to avoid the service fee.

Credit or debit card payment is available only as an online service. The University will not accept credit or debit card payments through the mail, in person, or over the phone. International payment

If youre an international student, you can pay your bill online in MyU by choosing international payment when making your payment.

The international payment processor, Flywire, is one option offered through the University. It will allow you to bypass international transfer fees and access foreign exchange rates that are usually more favorable than those offered by banks. You will need to provide your student ID and payer information to Flywire, so be sure to have it available.

Flywire provides 24-hour multilingual customer support if you have any questions or need assistance with their service. Mail/in person

Your tuition and fees payment must be received and processed by the due date in order to avoid a late fee. Take the following steps to ensure that your payment can be processed in a timely manner:

Send your payment by First Class U. S. Postal Service. Do not use campus mail to send payments.

If you have received a check made out to both you and the University, you must endorse the check before submitting it.

The recommended option is to have your scholarship provider send the check directly to the University.

University of Minnesota Duluth Office of Financial Aid 184 DAdB 1049 University Drive Duluth, MN 55812-3011

If the donor sends the check directly to the University made out to you, you must visit One Stop in person to endorse it.

Submit all scholarship checks you receive to a One Stop counselor so the funds can be deposited into your University student account. If the donor sends the check directly to the University made out to you, you must visit One Stop in person to endorse it. 529 plan

A 529 plan is a tax-advantaged savings plan designed to encourage saving and paying for college costs, including tuition. You have a few 529 payment options available to you:

If your plan requires that funds are sent directly to the University, visit 529 plans for more details.

If your like me, you’ve probably found yourself staring at your UMD student account balance wondering, “How the heck do I pay this thing?” or “When is this actually due?” Don’t worry – your not alone. Before we get into the nitty-gritty of making payments, it’s important to understand what your UMD bill actually includes and how to access it.

  1. Visit the Student Financial Services and Cashiering website at https://billpay.umd.edu/
  2. Click on “My Account” or “Access Account”

  4. From there, you can view your student account inquiry, current account balance, and e-bill

What’s Included in Your UMD Bill?

Your UMD bill typically includes:

  • Tuition charges
  • Mandatory fees
  • Room and board (if applicable)

Sometimes you might see charges you don’t recognize. For example, some students have noticed a “FIRST BK PRG” charge on their accounts. If you see unfamiliar charges, check the announcements section on the billing website or contact the Financial Service Center.

Online Payments

The most convenient way to pay is online through the UMD bill pay system:

  1. Go to https://billpay.umd.edu/
  2. Click “Make a Payment”
  3. Log in with your credentials
  4. Follow the prompts to complete your payment

Parents or guardians can’t access your billing information unless you specifically authorize them. To set up parent/guardian access:

  1. Log into your student account
  2. Navigate to the “Parent or Authorized User Access” section
  3. Add your parent/guardian’s email
  4. They’ll receive instructions to set up their account

I highly recommend setting this up if your parents help with your education expenses – it makes everything sooooo much easier!

Terp Payment Plan: Breaking Down Your Bill

Let’s be real – coming up with the full amount for tuition all at once can be stressful. That’s where the Terp Payment Plan comes in clutch.

What is the Terp Payment Plan?

The Terp Payment Plan allows you to split your semester bill into multiple monthly installments instead of paying the entire amount upfront. It’s basically a interest-free loan from UMD.

How to Enroll

To enroll in the Terp Payment Plan:

  1. Visit https://billpay.umd.edu/
  2. Click on “Payment Plans”
  3. Follow the enrollment instructions
  4. Select your preferred payment plan option

For Spring 2026, enrollment opens on December 4, 2025, with the 4-installment plan available starting December 12, 2025.

Payment Plan Options

Typically, UMD offers different payment plan options:

  • 4-installment plan: Divides your bill into 4 equal payments
  • Alternative plans: Sometimes shorter options are available depending on when you enroll

There’s usually a small enrollment fee (around $45), but it’s well worth it if it helps you manage your finances better!

Managing Refunds

If you’ve paid more than your balance due (often happens with financial aid or scholarships), you’ll receive a refund.

Setting Up Direct Deposit

The fastest way to receive refunds is through direct deposit:

  1. Go to https://billpay.umd.edu/
  2. Click on “Student Refunds”
  3. Select “Enroll in Direct Deposit”
  4. Enter your bank information

Trust me, direct deposit is WAY faster than waiting for a paper check to arrive in the mail!

Refund Timeline

  • Direct deposit: Usually processed within 3-5 business days
  • Paper checks: Can take 7-10 business days to arrive by mail

Special Billing Situations

Third-Party/Sponsored Billing

If your employer or another organization is paying your tuition:

  1. Submit the proper authorization forms to UMD
  2. Make sure your sponsor’s information is current
  3. Follow up to ensure payment is received

UMD accepts payments from 529 College Savings Plans and AmeriCorps. The process typically involves:

  3. Ensuring the payment is properly applied to your account

If you’ve received scholarships from organizations outside of UMD:

  1. Inform UMD about the scholarship

A payment plan is available for fall and spring semesters for degree-seeking students. If you enroll in the payment plan, you will need to pay the installment balance due by the due date to avoid late fees and a hold on your record. You must enroll in the payment plan each semester (and for each campus) that you would like to use it.
