Ever gotten that dreaded envelope with “NTTA” on it and thought “Oh great, another toll bill to deal with”? We’ve all been there. ZipCash bills can be confusing and if you don’t pay them on time, those fees add up fast! As someone who’s dealt with plenty of these bills (and yes occasionally forgotten to pay them) I want to share everything you need to know about paying your ZipCash bill.

What is ZipCash and How Does it Work?

ZipCash is NTTA’s pay-by-mail option for drivers who don’t have a TollTag. When you drive through a toll point without a TollTag cameras capture your license plate and NTTA sends a bill to the registered owner of the vehicle.

The bad news? ZipCash customers pay twice as much as TollTag customers. Yep, you read that right – double the price! This higher rate covers the additional costs of processing pay-by-mail transactions.

Here’s how it works

  1. You drive through a toll point without a TollTag
  2. Cameras take digital images of your license plate
  3. NTTA identifies the vehicle owner through DMV records
  4. A ZipCash bill is sent to your registered address
  5. You have 25 days to pay before fees are added

NTTA offers several options to pay your ZipCash bill:

1. Pay Online

The most convenient way to pay is through NTTA’s Online Customer Service Center:

PLUS

Avoiding Late Fees and Penalties

Here’s where things get serious. If you don’t pay your ZipCash bill on time, the fees stack up FAST:

  5. Legal Action

    • All tolls and fees
    • Court costs, fines, and additional fees

How to Save Money on Your Toll Bills

Why pay twice as much when you don’t have to? Here are two ways to save:

Option 1: Get a TollTag (Save 50%)

The smartest move is to open a TollTag account. TollTag customers pay half what ZipCash customers pay. Plus, you’ll never have to worry about bills in the mail or late fees.

Option 2: Sign Up for ZipCash Automatic Payments (Save 25%)

Not ready for a TollTag? You can still save 25% on NTTA roads by signing up for ZipCash automatic payments. You’ll receive one monthly e-statement and automatic payment processing.

Monthly Billing for ZipCash Customers

ZipCash bills are issued on a 25-day cycle, usually around the same date each month. The bill includes:

  • Account summary with previous balances
  • Payments and adjustments
  • Current tolls and new fees
  • Details of each transaction

To avoid forgetting payments, consider:

  • Setting up recurring payment reminders
  • Signing up for automatic payments (and save 25%)
  • Switching to electronic billing

Electronic Billing Option

Tired of paper bills? You can opt for email delivery of your ZipCash bills:

  1. Scan the QR code on your paper bill, OR
  2. Visit the Online Customer Service Center and enter your Account ID and PIN

To enroll:

  1. Establish online access to your ZipCash account
  2. Set your preference for receiving monthly statements via email
  3. To cancel, simply uncheck the email preference button

What Happens If You Don’t Pay? Serious Consequences!

NTTA has some serious enforcement tools for those who don’t pay their tolls:

Habitual Violator Status

If you accumulate 100+ unpaid tolls in a rolling year and receive at least two nonpayment notices, you’ll be classified as a “habitual violator” and face:

  • Assessment of all tolls plus late fees
  • Vehicle registration block
  • Ban from operating on NTTA toll roads
  • Possible Class C misdemeanor citation
  • Vehicle impoundment for repeated violations

Vehicle Registration Block

Can’t renew your registration? If you have 100+ delinquent tolls, you won’t be able to register your vehicle until all tolls and fees are paid. To clear a block:

In Person:

  • Pay at any NTTA Customer Service Center
  • Block removal notification sent to county tax office within 7-10 business days

By Phone:

  • Call NTTA customer service to pay by credit/debit card
  • Block removal notification sent to county tax office within 7-10 business days

NOTE: County tax offices cannot help resolve past-due tolls – you must contact NTTA directly.

Common FAQs About ZipCash

What if I no longer own the vehicle?

If you received a bill for a vehicle you no longer own, you’ll need to prove the change of ownership:

  • For dealer trades: Upload the bill of sale on NTTA’s website
  • For private sales: File a Vehicle Transfer Notification with the Texas DMV
  • Call NTTA within 7-10 days to verify the records update

Can I use ZipCash in a rental vehicle?

Yes, but rental companies have their own toll policies. Ask about their policy before renting, as you may face additional administrative charges from the rental company.

What if I never received previous bills?

If your address is verified as correct, fees typically won’t be waived. However, if NTTA sent bills to an incorrect address, they may restart the billing process and request payment for tolls only.

How are out-of-state vehicles billed?

NTTA works with DMVs in other states to identify vehicle owners. If you’re from another state, you’ll still receive a ZipCash bill at your registered address.

NTTA Toll Roads and Their Acronyms

When looking at your bill, you might see these abbreviations:

  • LLTB – Lewisville Lake Toll Bridge
  • MCLB – Mountain Creek Lake Bridge

My Personal Tips for Dealing with ZipCash Bills

Having dealt with my fair share of ZipCash bills, here are a few tips I’ve learned:

  1. Set a reminder – Mark your calendar for 5 days before the due date
  2. Go electronic – Paper bills can get lost in the mail or buried in junk mail
  3. Just get a TollTag – If you use toll roads more than 1-2 times a month, the savings are worth it
  4. Keep your vehicle registration updated – Make sure DMV has your current address
  5. Take screenshots of online payments as backup proof

Conclusion: Best Practices for Managing Your ZipCash Bills

The easiest way to handle ZipCash bills is to avoid them entirely by getting a TollTag, which saves you 50% on tolls. If that’s not an option right now, sign up for automatic payments to save 25% and eliminate the hassle of monthly payments.

Remember that NTTA uses toll revenue to repay debt used to build roads, plus maintain operations and safety programs. About 92% of drivers pay their tolls on time – be one of them to avoid the headache of late fees and enforcement actions!
