Have you ever got home after a long day just to find a late notice for your BTES bill? I’ve been there! After forgetting my Bristol Tennessee Essential Services payment once too often, I decided to explore all the payment options available. Lucky for us BTES offers a ton of convenient ways to pay our bills and I’m gonna share everything I learned along the way.
What is BTES?
Before diving into payment methods, let’s quickly recap what BTES actually is. Bristol Tennessee Essential Services is a municipally-owned utility company that provides:
- Electric service to over 34,000 customers
- Fiber-optic internet, phone, and cable TV to more than 19,000 customers
- Services across a 280-square-mile area in Bristol and Sullivan County, Tennessee
Now let’s talk about how to pay those bills!
1. Quick Pay – The Newest and Easiest Option
BTES recently launched a Quick Pay feature that’s been a game-changer for busy folks like me! The best part? You don’t even need to log into the customer portal to use it
To use Quick Pay:
- Visit the BTES customer portal at https://billing.btes.net/onlineportal
- Click on “Quick Pay” right on the homepage
- Follow the simple prompts to complete your payment
This has saved me several times when I realized my bill was due the next day!
2. Bank Draft – Set It and Forget It
One of my favorite options is the automatic bank draft. Once set up, BTES will automatically withdraw the current amount due on the due date. No more forgetting!
To set up bank draft:
- Download the bank draft form from the BTES website
- Complete and submit the form
- Allow at least 10 business days for processing
Important note: If your current bill is due within the next two weeks, you’ll need to pay that one separately while waiting for your bank draft to be activated.
3. Online E-Check Payments
If you prefer to manually pay each month but still want to do it online, the E-Check option is great. You’ll need:
- Your BTES account number
- Your account password
- Your bank checking account information
A small fee of $1.00 applies to each transaction, but that’s worth the convenience for me.
4. Credit or Debit Card Online
For those who like to rack up those rewards points, BTES accepts credit and debit cards online. Just be aware there’s a 2.45% convenience fee added to each transaction. I usually only use this method when I’m trying to hit a spending bonus on a new credit card!
5. Phone Payments
Sometimes the internet is down or the website isn’t cooperating. When that happens, I call the automated system at 423-574-1729. It walks you through the payment process step-by-step.
The fees are the same as online payments:
- $1 for check-by-phone
- 2.45% fee for credit/debit cards
6. In-Person Payments
When I’m in the neighborhood, sometimes I just stop by the BTES offices at 2470 Volunteer Parkway. They accept:
- Cash
- Check
- Money order
Their hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
7. Drop Boxes – 24/7 Convenience
BTES maintains three convenient drop box locations for those times when I need to pay after hours:
- In the parking lot between Avoca Elementary School and the BTES office
- In the drive-thru lane at the BTES office (near the drive-in theater side)
- Downtown Bristol next to the courthouse (801 Anderson St, facing 8th Street)
I usually use the drive-thru one on my way to work!
8. CheckOut – Pay with Cash at Retailers
This is a newer option I’ve only used a couple times, but it’s super convenient if you prefer to pay with cash. With CheckOut, you can pay your BTES bill at participating retailers like:
- Dollar General
- CVS Pharmacy
The best part is the payment applies to your account immediately! More info is available at www.btes.net/checkout.
9. Mail Your Payment
Sometimes old-school is the way to go. BTES provides an envelope with your bill, or you can mail your payment to:
PO Box 549
Bristol, TN 37621
Just remember to allow enough time for delivery before the due date!
10. Other Payment Locations
BTES also accepts payments at:
- Bank of Tennessee
- First Horizon
This is handy if you’re already doing banking at these locations.
Managing Your BTES Account Online
Besides just paying your bill, the BTES customer portal offers several other useful features:
Account Management
- View your account profile and update information
- Check your account history
- Track your usage history
Billing Features
- Sign up for E-Bill to get your bills electronically
- View payment arrangements
- Set up alerts so you never miss a payment
Special Payment Options

What to Do During an Outage
While browsing the BTES portal, I noticed they’ve got a good system for handling outages. If an outage is reported for your account, a notification appears on the portal with a link to view more details. This saved me from unnecessary phone calls during the last storm!

My Personal Experience with BTES Bill Pay
I’ve been a BTES customer for over 5 years now, and I’ve tried pretty much every payment method they offer. At first, I was writing checks and using the drop boxes, but after missing a payment (and dealing with the late fee), I switched to bank draft.
The bank draft has been super reliable, but there was one time when I changed banks and forgot to update my info with BTES. That’s when I discovered their payment arrangement option, which helped me catch up without penalty.
These days, I use a mix of bank draft for my regular monthly bills and Quick Pay for those times when I need to make an additional payment or help my elderly neighbor with her bill.
Tips for New BTES Customers
If you’re new to the BTES service area, here are some tips I wish someone had told me:
- Set up your online account ASAP. The portal makes everything easier.
- Consider bank draft from day one. It’s the “set it and forget it” option that’s saved me many times.
- Sign up for alerts. You can get notifications before your bill is due.
- Keep your contact info updated. This is crucial during outages.
- Save the customer service number in your phone. You never know when you’ll need it!
Final Thoughts
BTES has really made bill paying convenient with so many options. Whether you’re tech-savvy or prefer traditional methods, there’s something for everyone. My personal recommendation? Set up bank draft as your primary method, but familiarize yourself with Quick Pay as a backup. This combo has kept my utilities running smoothly for years!
And remember, if you ever have questions about your bill or payment options, the BTES customer experience team is just a phone call away at (423) 968-1526 or by email at [email protected].
