Are you tired of writing checks or making trips to City Hall just to pay your utility bills? I’ve been there too, and that’s why I’m excited to share everything you need to know about Blair’s online bill pay system The city has made some big changes recently, and I want to make sure you’re not caught off guard when it’s time to pay your next bill
What’s New with Blair’s Online Bill Pay?
As of February 1, 2024, the City of Blair has fully transitioned to a new payment portal called FrontDesk Utility This isn’t just an optional upgrade – it’s now required for all utility payments I recently made the switch myself and found it pretty straightforward once I got the hang of it.
The old system is completely phased out now, so if you haven’t created your FrontDesk account yet, you’ll need to do that before your next payment is due.
Creating Your FrontDesk Account
Setting up your account is the first step to managing your Blair utility bills online. Here’s what you’ll need to do:
- Visit the Blair city website at blairnebraska.org
- Click on the “FrontDesk Utility” link
- Select “Create your account” option
- Follow the prompts to link your utility account(s)
- Set up your login credentials and security questions
I found it helpful to have my most recent utility bill handy during this process since you’ll need your account number to link everything correctly.
Making a Payment Through FrontDesk
Once your account is set up, making payments is pretty simple You can
- Pay immediately with a credit/debit card or e-check
- Schedule future payments
- View your payment history
- Download past bills and receipts
One thing to be aware of – and this caught me by surprise the first time – is that there are processing fees for online payments. As of December 1, 2023, all FrontDesk credit card transactions incur a fee of 2.55% or a $2 minimum (whichever is greater). It’s not ideal, but for me, the convenience is worth the small extra charge.
Setting Up Autopay (Never Miss a Payment Again!)
If you’re like me and sometimes forget when bills are due, the autopay feature is a lifesaver. Here’s how to enroll:
- Log into your FrontDesk account
- Look for the “Enroll in Autopay” option
- Select your preferred payment method
- Choose your autopay settings (payment date, etc.)
- Confirm your selection
I’ve been using autopay for about three months now, and it’s given me peace of mind knowing my utilities will always be paid on time without me having to remember due dates.
Managing Multiple Accounts
This is where the new system really shines compared to the old one. If you own multiple properties in Blair or have separate accounts for different utilities, you can now combine them all under one login. No more juggling different passwords or making separate payments!
To combine accounts:
- Log into your primary FrontDesk account
- Look for the “Combine your multiple accounts” option
- Enter the account numbers you wish to link
- Confirm the association
We recently added my in-laws’ account to our dashboard so we could help them manage their bills, and it was super convenient having everything in one place.
Other Payment Options in Blair
While FrontDesk is now required for utility payments, the city offers different payment methods for other services:
Airport Payments
If you need to make payments related to airport houses or hangars, there’s a separate payment system. The fees are slightly different here – since October 1, 2022, these transactions have a fee of $2.00 or 2.55% (whichever is greater) for credit cards, and $1.75 for e-checks.
Building Department Payments
For building and zoning permits, there’s yet another payment portal. It’s important to note that contractor registrations can’t be paid online – you’ll need to contact the Building Department directly for those. The fees match the airport payment system (2.55% or $2 minimum for credit cards).
Common Issues & How to Solve Them
During my first couple months using FrontDesk, I ran into a few hiccups. Here are some common problems and solutions:
“I can’t log in to my account”
Double-check that you’re using the correct URL and login credentials. If you’ve forgotten your password, there should be a “Forgot Password” option on the login screen.
“My payment didn’t go through”
This could be due to insufficient funds, an expired card, or a technical glitch. Check your payment method details and try again, or contact utility billing at City Hall (402-426-4191) for assistance.
“I need to update my contact information”
The good news is you can easily update your account preferences through the FrontDesk portal. Just log in and look for the “Update your account preferences” option.
Why Blair Made the Switch to FrontDesk
You might be wondering why the city changed systems in the first place. While they haven’t explicitly stated all the reasons, based on my experience with both the old and new systems, I can see several benefits:
- Improved security features protect your personal and payment information
- More user-friendly interface makes it easier to navigate and manage accounts
- Additional features like autopay and account combination weren’t available before
- Better reporting and tracking helps you monitor your utility usage and payments
The transition wasn’t perfect (what technology change ever is?), but overall, I think the new system is a definite upgrade.
Is There a Mobile App?
Currently, there isn’t a dedicated mobile app for Blair’s utility payments. However, the FrontDesk portal is mobile-responsive, which means you can easily access it from your smartphone or tablet’s web browser. I’ve paid my bill from my phone several times when I was away from home, and the experience was pretty smooth.
What About Payment Security?
In today’s world, security is a major concern when making online payments. The FrontDesk system uses industry-standard encryption to protect your personal and financial information. When making payments, you’ll notice the secure connection indicator in your browser (usually a padlock icon).
I was initially hesitant about storing my payment information in the system, but after researching their security measures, I felt comfortable setting up autopay with my credit card.
Contact Information for Help
If you’re struggling with the online bill pay system or have questions about your utility bill, don’t hesitate to reach out to City Hall:
- Phone: 402-426-4191
- Fax: 402-426-4195
- Address: 218 S 16th Street, Blair, NE 68008
The staff there has been really helpful whenever I’ve called with questions about my account or the new system.
Final Thoughts on Blair’s Online Bill Pay
Overall, I think the transition to FrontDesk is a positive move for Blair residents. Yes, there’s the initial hassle of creating a new account and learning a new system, but the added convenience and features make it worthwhile in the long run.
The processing fees are a bit of a downside, but they’re fairly standard for online payment systems, and the time saved not having to mail checks or visit City Hall in person offsets this cost for many of us.
If you haven’t made the switch yet, I’d recommend setting aside about 15 minutes to create your account and get familiar with the system. It might seem like a chore now, but you’ll thank yourself later when you can pay your utility bill in just a few clicks!
Remember, as of February 1, 2024, all utility payments must go through the FrontDesk system, so it’s better to get set up sooner rather than later.
Have you already started using Blair’s new online bill pay system? What’s been your experience so far? I’d love to hear your thoughts and tips in the comments below!
