Ever found yourself staring at a medical bill wondering how to pay it? You’re not alone! As someone who’s navigated the healthcare system for years, I’ve experienced the frustration of figuring out payment systems firsthand. Today, I’m breaking down everything you need to know about CHI bill pay options across their various healthcare networks.
What is CHI and Why Do Their Billing Systems Vary?
CHI (Catholic Health Initiatives) operates multiple healthcare networks across different states, including CHI Health and CHI St. Alexius Health. Each network has its own bill pay system, which can be confusing if you’ve received care at different locations.
I remember my first time trying to pay a CHI bill online – I went to the wrong website because I didn’t realize the billing systems were separate! Let’s make sure you don’t make the same mistake.
CHI St. Alexius Health Bill Pay Options
If you’ve received care from CHI St. Alexius Health facilities in North Dakota, here’s how to pay your bill:
Online Payment Options
CHI St. Alexius Health offers online bill pay for most of their locations. However, the exact process varies depending on which facility provided your service:
- Bismarck, Mandan, and Minot – Access online bill pay through their patient portal
- Carrington and New Rockford – Separate online payment system for hospital services
- Devil’s Lake – Dedicated online payment system for hospital bills
- Dickinson and Beach – Online bill pay available for hospital services
- Garrison – Online payment system for both hospital and clinic services
- Turtle Lake and Washburn – Online bill pay for both hospital and clinic services
- Williston – Online payment system for hospital bills
Important Note: If you receive a brown-colored statement from the Bismarck, Mandan, or Minot facilities, this is generated from a legacy system and online bill pay is NOT available for these accounts. You’ll need to call (701) 530-8806 or (800) 545-8860 for assistance.
Phone Payment Options
Don’t want to pay online? No problem! Each facility has dedicated phone lines for billing questions and payments:
| Location | Hospital Billing | Clinic Billing |
|---|---|---|
| Bismarck/Mandan/Minot | (701) 530-8806 or (800) 545-8860 | Same number |
| Carrington/New Rockford | (877) 721-6504 | (866) 792-7049 |
| Devil’s Lake | (800) 545-8860 | (866) 792-7051 |
| Dickinson/Beach | (877) 721-6504 | (866) 792-7051 |
| Garrison | (800) 545-8860 | Same number |
| Turtle Lake/Washburn | (800) 545-8860 | Same number |
| Williston | (877) 721-6504 | (866) 792-8018 |
In-Person Payments
If you prefer to pay in person, you can do so at most CHI St. Alexius Health facilities. For example, at CHI St. Alexius – Bismarck, you can go to the 10th Street Entrance, ask for Patient Representative at Patient Access, and make your payment there.
CHI Health Bill Pay (Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas)
If you’ve received care from CHI Health facilities in Nebraska southwest Iowa or northern Kansas, your bill payment process will be different from the St. Alexius system.
CHI Health offers several convenient ways to pay your medical bills:
- Online – Through their MyChart patient portal or the dedicated Bill Pay section on chihealth.com
- Phone – Contact the number listed on your billing statement
- Mail – Send payment to the address indicated on your bill
- In-Person – Pay at any CHI Health facility’s billing office
Common Questions About CHI Bill Pay
Will I receive one bill for all services?
Not necessarily. Your bill from CHI St. Alexius Health will include services from their facilities and employed physicians. However, you’ll receive separate bills for:
- Emergency room physicians (from Healthsource)
- Radiologists (from BRA/Bismarck Radiology Associates or VRad)
- Non-CHI employed physicians (like Mid Dakota Clinic or Bone & Joint)
This is pretty standard across most healthcare systems, including CHI Health facilities
When will I get my first bill?
For CHI St. Alexius Health, you’ll receive your first statement AFTER your insurance processes the claim. This can sometimes take several weeks, so don’t be surprised if it takes a while.
Will my whole family be on one bill?
For CHI St. Alexius Health, they use “guarantor billing.” This means the person legally responsible for charges receives the bill. In North Dakota, patients over 18 are their own guarantors and receive separate statements. This system is similar at CHI Health facilities as well.
What if I can’t afford to pay my bill?
Both CHI Health and CHI St. Alexius Health offer financial assistance programs for patients who qualify. For CHI St. Alexius Health, you can contact their counseling services at (844) 286-5546 to discuss options. CHI Health has similar programs accessible through their financial assistance department.
Tips for a Smoother Bill Pay Experience
After helping several family members navigate their CHI bills, I’ve picked up some helpful tricks:
-
Keep track of where you received care – Different facilities have different billing systems, even within the same CHI network.
-
Pay copays at time of service when possible – This reduces the number of bills you’ll receive later.
-
Check your insurance processing first – If you try to pay before insurance processes, you might overpay.
-
Save billing department phone numbers – Having the right number ready saves time when you have questions.
-
Set up online accounts in advance – Creating your online account before you need it makes the process easier.
-
Ask about payment plans – If you can’t pay in full, most CHI facilities offer monthly payment options.
-
Double-check for duplicate bills – Sometimes you might receive separate bills for the same service from different departments.
What Makes CHI Bill Pay Confusing (And How to Deal With It)
The most challenging aspect of CHI bill pay is understanding which system to use. Since CHI operates multiple healthcare networks across different states, each with its own billing procedures, it can get complicated.
I once received care at a CHI St. Alexius facility while traveling, and later at my local CHI Health hospital – managing those separate bills was confusing! The key is to look carefully at the letterhead of your bill to determine which facility it came from, then use the appropriate payment method.
The Three Main CHI Networks and Their Bill Pay Systems:
- CHI St. Alexius Health – Primarily serves North Dakota with location-specific billing systems
- CHI Health – Serves Nebraska, southwest Iowa, and northern Kansas
- Other CHI facilities nationwide – Each may have unique billing processes
Understanding Different Types of Bills
One confusing aspect of healthcare billing is receiving multiple bills for a single visit. Here’s why this happens with CHI facilities:
- Facility bill – Charges for the use of the hospital or clinic
- Professional bill – Charges for the physician’s services
- Ancillary services – Charges for lab work, imaging, or other specialized services
Each may come separately and potentially from different billing departments.
What If There’s a Mistake on Your Bill?
If you spot an error on your CHI bill, don’t panic! Here’s what to do:
- Document the error – Note exactly what you believe is wrong
- Gather supporting evidence – Insurance EOBs, receipts, etc.
- Contact the appropriate billing department – Use the phone numbers listed above
- Keep notes of all conversations – Including names, dates, and what was discussed
- Follow up in writing – Send a letter or email summarizing your concerns
- Be persistent but polite – Billing errors happen, and most can be resolved
Final Thoughts: Making CHI Bill Pay Work for You
The healthcare billing system isn’t perfect – it can be fragmented and confusing. But understanding how CHI’s bill pay systems work across their various networks can save you time, money, and stress.
I’ve found that taking a proactive approach works best – setting up online accounts, keeping track of which facilities you’ve visited, and addressing billing questions promptly helps avoid bigger headaches down the road.
Remember, if you’re ever unsure about a CHI bill or how to pay it, the best approach is to call the number listed on your statement. The billing representatives can guide you to the right payment system and answer any questions specific to your situation.

Your bill will include services from CHI St. Alexius Health and CHI St. Alexius Health employed physicians. You will receive a separate bill for services provided by non-CHI physicians.
What other bills will I receive?
You may receive additional bills from the emergency room physicians. This bill will come from Healthsource. Also, radiologists who reviewed any x-rays you may have had will send you a bill. There are two possible bills you will receive from BRA/Bismarck Radiology Associates or VRad. If you were treated by a non-CHI employed physician (ex. Mid Dakota Clinic or Bone & Joint), you will receive a separate bill from them. If you have questions regarding those bills, please contact their offices directly at the numbers listed on the statement(s) you receive.
When will I get my first CHI bill?
You will receive your first statement AFTER your insurance processes the claim.
Will my whole family be on one bill?
We do guarantor billing. The guarantor is the person legally responsible for all charges incurred by the patient. If the patient is over age 18 in North Dakota, they are listed as their own guarantor and will receive a separate statement.
When should I pay my Copay?
We encourage you to make your copay at the time of service.
Why is the billing customer service address and the remit to address different?
The customer service center address is the physical location of our customer service department. The remit to address on the statement is for the bank as they handle all deposits. CHI St. Alexius Health and our clinics have a consolidated business office.
