After several years of working with the USDA to obtain funding for Sedalia’s infrastructure project, the District received confirmation in June 2024 of the USDA’s decision to award funds for the project. District voters approved debt service for the project in a TABOR election in November 2022. At the time of voter approval, the USDA award being sought was anticipated to have a grant component of $3,500,000.00 and a loan component of $2,200,000.00. Upon approval in June, the final award was grant of $5,045,000.00 and loan of $561,000.00. This is great news for District residents and property owners, as the amount of the loan will result in much lower mill levy than anticipated when the funding comes in and the project proceeds.

So, you’ve got that Sedalia water bill sitting on your counter, and you’re wondering what’s the easiest way to take care of it? I’ve been there too! After living in Sedalia for years, I’ve figured out all the different ways to pay the water department, and I’m gonna share everything I know with you today.
Understanding Your Sedalia Water Bill Options
The City of Sedalia offers several convenient ways to pay your water, sewer, and trash bills. I remember when I first moved here, I was confused about all the payment options, but now it’s super easy once you understand the system.
Online Payment Portal – The Most Convenient Option
The City of Sedalia partners with a merchant transaction system to handle online payments. This is probably the easiest method if you’re comfortable using the internet.
To pay online
- Visit the official payment portal at sedaliamo.merchanttransact.com
- For first-time users, you’ll need to register by clicking “Sign Up”
- Have a copy of your recent bill handy for registration
- You’ll need:
- Your last name
- Account number (formatted like 123456-000)
- Email address
If you don’t have a recent bill, don’t worry! Just call the water department office at 660-827-3000, and they’ll help you out
Once registered you can do so much more than just paying your bill
- Make one-time payments
- Set up paperless billing (which I highly recommend – saves trees!)
- View your current and past bills
- Check your usage history
- Review your account history
The website works on most modern browsers, but I noticed they specifically mention that Internet Explorer isn’t supported. Use Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge instead to avoid any problems.
One-Time Payment Option (No Registration Required)
Sometimes you just want to pay your bill without creating another online account, right? I totally get that! The good news is that Sedalia’s water department offers a one-time payment option.
Look for the “One Time Payment” button on the login page. This allows you to make a payment without registering for an account. It’s perfect for those months when you’re just trying to pay quickly without the hassle.
Phone Payments
If you prefer talking to a real person or don’t have internet access, you can always pay by phone. The City of Sedalia water department can be reached at:
- 660-826-1234 (listed on the payment portal)
- 660-827-3000 (listed as the main city contact)
I’ve called them several times with questions, and they’re usually pretty helpful!
In-Person Payments
Sometimes I just prefer doing things the old-fashioned way. If you’re like me and want to pay in person, you can visit:
City of Sedalia
200 South Osage Avenue
Sedalia, MO 65301
Their office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Mail-In Payments
While not specifically mentioned on the website, most city utilities accept payments by mail. Just make sure to include your account number on your check and allow enough time for delivery before the due date.
What Services Are Included in Your Bill?
Your Sedalia water bill typically covers multiple services:

It’s all bundled together for convenience, which I really appreciate. One bill, multiple services – makes life simpler!
Setting Up Paperless Billing
I switched to paperless billing last year, and it’s been great! Here’s how you can do it too:

Going paperless means:

Understanding Your Water Usage
One of the coolest features of the online portal is being able to track your water usage. I had a leaky toilet last summer, and seeing the spike in my usage helped me catch it before the bill got too crazy!
With the online system, you can:
- View your monthly usage patterns
- Compare current usage with previous months
- Identify potential leaks or problems
- Plan for seasonal changes in water usage
What If You Can’t Pay Your Bill?

In my experience, they’re usually willing to work with residents on payment arrangements if you reach out before your service is disconnected.
Other City Services You Can Pay Online
The City of Sedalia’s payment system isn’t just for water bills! You can also pay for:

Tips for Managing Your Water Bill
Over the years, I’ve learned a few tricks to keep my water bill manageable:
- Check for leaks regularly – A dripping faucet or running toilet can waste thousands of gallons per month
- Install low-flow fixtures – Replacing old showerheads and faucets can significantly reduce water usage
- Water lawns efficiently – Early morning or evening watering reduces evaporation
- Use the dishwasher instead of handwashing – Modern dishwashers use less water than washing dishes by hand
- Monitor your usage online – Keeping track of your consumption helps identify problems early
Signing Up for City Notifications
Want to stay on top of your bills and other city announcements? The City of Sedalia offers a notification system that can alert you about:
- City notices
- News
- Events
- And much more!
To sign up, visit their website and click “Sign Up Now” under notifications. I get alerts about billing cycles, water main breaks, and even snow routes during winter!

Learn About the District
Sedalia Water and Sanitation District is a quasi-municipal corporation and political subdivision of state of Colorado. It is a Special District organized under and subject to Title 32 of the Colorado Revised Statutes and the primary service it provides is water service to the District’s customers. Despite its name, the District does not provide sanitary sewer services.
The District was formed in 1958 and took over ownership of the existing water system infrastructure that was previously owned by and originally installed by the railroad. The District has approximately 94 customers.
The District has a general operating mill levy of 13.085 mills that it levies on real property within the District boundaries, and such mill levy generates property tax revenue to assist with funding District operations. Funding for operations comes from property tax revenue, customer water fees, and often grant funds that are obtained by the District. Currently in 2022, the District does not have a debt service mill levy as the District has no existing debt.
