Hey there, fellow Sumter residents! Today I wanna talk about something we all deal with every month – paying our water bills. I know, not the most exciting topic, but trust me, knowing your options for handling your Sumter water bill can save you both time and headaches.
Whether you’re new to Sumter or have lived here forever like me, understanding how to pay your water bill efficiently is super important So let’s dive in and explore all the ways you can pay your Sumter water bill!
Understanding Sumter Water Bill Services: City vs. County
One thing that confuses a lot of people is that there are actually TWO different water utilities in Sumter
- City of Sumter Utilities – Located at 130 S. Harvin Street
- Sumter County Water Utility – Located at 1289 N. Main Street
This is important to know because where and how you pay depends on which service you use Not knowing this distinction has caused many of my neighbors to drive to the wrong location or try to pay through the wrong website!

Ways to Pay Your City of Sumter Water Bill
Let me walk you through all the different ways you can pay your City of Sumter water bill. I’ve tried most of these methods myself, so I can give you the real scoop!
1. Pay Online
This is definitely my favorite method! The City of Sumter offers online bill pay through their website. Just visit the City of Sumter website and look for the “Pay My Utility Bill” button. It’s super convenient and available 24/7.
Pro tip: Payments made after hours will be posted the next business day. If you make a payment after hours on your due date, your account will still be charged a late fee. I learned this the hard way last summer!
2. Pay by Phone
If you prefer talking to a real person or don’t have internet access, you can call (803) 436-2541 to pay your bill by phone. They’ll walk you through the process, and it’s pretty straightforward.
3. Walk-in Payments
Sometimes I just like to get out of the house, so I’ll head over to the City Utilities office at 130 S. Harvin Street to pay in person. Their billing hours are:
Monday – Friday: 8:30am – 5:00pm
4. Drive-thru Payments
In a hurry? The drive-thru option is great! You don’t even have to get out of your car. I use this all the time when I’m running errands.
5. Night or Weekend Drop Box
If you work during regular business hours, the night drop box is super convenient. Just drop your payment in the secure box, and they’ll process it the next business day.
6. Bank Draft
This is the ultimate “set it and forget it” option. You can set up automatic payments through bank draft so you never miss a payment. My neighbor swears by this method and hasn’t had a late fee in years!
Ways to Pay Your Sumter County Water Bill
If you’re on the County system, your options are slightly different:
1. Online Payment – PAY WATER UTILITY
The Sumter County website has a “PAY WATER UTILITY” button prominently displayed. This will take you to their online payment system.

Tips for Managing Your Sumter Water Bill
After years of paying my water bill in Sumter, I’ve picked up a few tips that might help you:
1. Set Calendar Reminders
I set up a reminder in my phone calendar for 3 days before my bill is due every month. This gives me plenty of time to make the payment before any late fees kick in.
2. Check for Leaks
An unexpected high water bill could mean you have a leak somewhere. Check all your faucets, toilets, and outdoor spigots. My water bill doubled last spring, and it turned out I had a toilet that was constantly running!
3. Consider Budget Billing
Some utilities offer budget billing options that average your costs throughout the year, making monthly payments more predictable.
4. Keep Track of Payment Confirmations
Whether you pay online, by phone, or in person, always keep your confirmation number or receipt until you see the payment reflected on your next bill.
