How to Easily Pay Your City of Patterson Utility Bill (2025 Guide)

Post date |

Are you tired of waiting in long lines at city hall just to pay your water bill? I’ve been there too! As a Patterson resident for over 5 years, I’ve tried every possible way to pay my city utilities – some good, some… well, let’s just say I’ve learned my lessons the hard way

Today I’m sharing everything you need to know about the City of Patterson bill pay options so you can save time and avoid those pesky late fees that none of us want to deal with.

What Services Are Included in Your Patterson Utility Bill?

Before we jump into how to pay, let’s quickly review what you’re actually paying for. Your City of Patterson utility bill typically includes

  • Water service – usage plus meter fees
  • Sewer service – typically a flat rate of $49.94 monthly (as of July 2019)
  • Garbage collection – $34.55 monthly for a standard 96-gallon toter (as of July 2019)

Understanding your bill is the first step to managing it properly The City of Patterson follows a specific billing cycle that’s important to understand

  1. Your water meter is read around the middle of each month
  2. Your usage is calculated based on current and previous readings
  3. Bills are mailed the first week of the following month
  4. Payment is due by the last day of the month when billed

For example, December water usage appears on your January bill, which is due by January 31st.

Online Bill Pay: The Easiest Way to Pay Your Patterson Utility Bill

Let’s be honest – nobody wants to spend their lunch break standing in line at city hall. The good news is that Patterson offers a convenient online payment system through their Web Payments platform.

How to Pay Your Patterson Utility Bill Online

To pay your bill online, you’ll need to visit the City of Patterson’s merchant transaction site at https://patterson.merchanttransact.com/. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Your account number (exactly as it appears on your statement)
  • A Mastercard, Visa, Discover, or American Express credit/debit card
  • An email address (if you want a receipt)

There are two ways to pay online:

  1. One-Time Payment – Perfect if you just want to pay without creating an account

Important Note About Convenience Fees

When paying online, be aware that there’s a $2.50 convenience fee added to each transaction (effective since May 1, 2022). This fee covers payment handling and processing – the City of Patterson doesn’t receive any portion of this fee.

Avoid Late Fees: Understanding Patterson’s Payment Deadlines

Let me tell you a little story – my first year in Patterson, I got slapped with THREE late fees because I didn’t understand the city’s billing schedule. Don’t make my mistake!

Here’s what happens if you miss the payment deadline:

  1. If payment isn’t received by the last day of the billing month, a 15-Day Notice appears on your next bill
  2. This notice generates a $17.00 Late Fee
  3. You then have until the 15th of that month to pay your past-due balance plus the late fee
  4. If you miss this deadline, a second $17.00 Late Fee is added and you’ll receive a 48-Hour Notice
  5. If payment isn’t made before the 48-Hour Notice deadline, your utilities are shut off
  6. Once shut off, there’s an additional $34.00 administrative charge to restore service

Trust me, those fees add up quickly! The best way to avoid late fees is to set up automatic payments or at least calendar reminders for yourself.

Why Did My Water Bill Suddenly Increase?

This is a question I hear ALL the time from fellow Patterson residents. If you’ve experienced a sudden spike in your water bill, the most common causes are:

  • Running toilets (the silent bill-killers!)
  • Water sprinklers running too long or leaking
  • Pool autofill malfunctioning
  • Water softener issues

The good news is that Patterson is about 86% complete with their meter changeout project, converting to cellular meters. You can download the EyeOnWater app to monitor your water usage in real-time, which is super helpful for catching these issues before they become expensive problems.

Important Information About NSF Payments

Be careful about bouncing checks or having insufficient funds for automatic payments. Patterson has a strict policy regarding returned payments:

  • First offense: $28.00 NSF fee
  • Second offense: $35.00 NSF fee
  • Third offense: $35.00 NSF fee + restricted to certified funds only (money orders, cashier’s checks) for 24 months

These fees are non-refundable, so double-check your account balance before making payments!

Comparing Patterson’s Utility Bill Pay to Other Cities

I recently helped my cousin in St. Louis, MO figure out their city utilities payment system, and it got me thinking about how different cities handle this.

While Patterson offers online payments through their merchant transaction platform, the City of St. Louis offers payments through their official website at https://www.stlouis-mo.gov/.

Both cities offer multiple payment options, but I’ve found Patterson’s system to be more straightforward for residents. The City of Patterson clearly outlines their billing procedures, late fees, and payment deadlines on their utilities page at https://www.pattersonca.gov/165/Utilities.
